La risposta è: tutto dipende da dove vivi. Molte persone scelgono di rimanere a letto se vivono in America o in un paese anglosassone quando il tredicesimo giorno del mese cade di venerdì. Non vogliono tentare il destino. Quindi non salgono in macchina o vanno al lavoro. Si nascondono invece sotto le lenzuola! Queste persone soffrono di una fobia scientificamente riconosciuta nota come “paraskevidekatriaphobia”, una profonda paura di venerdì 13.

The answer to that is: it all depends on where you live. Many people choose to remain in bed if they live in America or an Anglosaxon country when the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday. They don’t want to tempt the fates. So they don’t get in their cars or go to work. They hide instead under the sheets! These people suffer from a scientifically recognized phobia known as “paraskevidekatriaphobia,” a deep fear of Friday the 13th.

Really! I’m not kidding! The term “paraskevidekatriaphobia” is formed from the Greek words Paraskevi (meaning Friday) and dekatreis (meaning 13). People suffering from this phobia display extreme anxiety and nervousness as the day approaches. For many years people have considered the number 13 unlucky. Still, it wasn’t until the 19th century that the day and the number came together to be considered doubly unfortunate. Even today, it is common that many hospitals don’t have Room 13. Some airports don’t have a Gate 13, and many high-rise buildings entirely skip level 13

Friday and 13 are also associated with capital punishment. In medieval Britain, a Friday was the day public hangings tended to take place. It has also been suggested that it was a Friday 13 on which Philip IV of France seized the Knights Templar – a historical event featured in the novel The Da Vinci Code, which popularized the link between Friday 13 superstition and the decline of the religious order.

Anzi! Se soffrite di “paraskevidekatriaphobia”, dovreste andare tutti in Italia! In Italia, venerdì 13 non è un gran problema. Non desta preoccupazione per il proprio benessere e sicurezza. Esattamente il contrario! È considerato fortunato perché è associato alla “Grande Dea”, responsabile della fertilità e dei cicli lunari. Molti italiani ritengono che il numero tredici porti prosperità e vita e siano particolarmente fortunati quando si gioca d’azzardo.

Indeed! If you suffer from “paraskevidekatriaphobia,” y’all should get yourselves to Italy! In Italy, Friday the 13th is no big deal. It doesn’t cause concern for one’s well-being and safety. Exactly the opposite! It is considered lucky because it is associated with the “Great Goddess,” responsible for fertility and lunar cycles. Many Italians believe the number thirteen brings prosperity and life and are especially lucky when gambling.

Per un italiano, invece, bisogna diffidare di venerdì 17! Nel mondo religioso, il Vecchio Testamento ci dice che il Grande Diluvio ha avuto luogo il 17 e che il 17 è il giorno in cui Gesù è morto.

To an Italian, on the other hand, one needs to be wary of Friday the 17th! In the religious world, the Old Testament tells us the Great Flood occurred on the 17th and that the 17th is the day Jesus died.

Nell’antica Roma, scrivevano “VIXI” o “ho vissuto” sulle tombe dei morti. Nel Medioevo però — visto che l’analfabetismo era diffuso, fu spesso confuso con il numero romano 17, che è scritto così: XVII.

In Ancient Rome, they used to write “VIXI” or “I lived” on tombs of the dead. In the Middle ages, because illiteracy was widespread, it was often confused with the Roman numeral 17, which is written like this: XVII.
