Faccio il Presepe / How to prepare Italian Nativity Scene — Youtube video

Come potete vedere sto preparando la casa per Natale. Ho appena finito a decorare l’albero con i miei figli. Nel corso degli anni ho raccolto un sacco degli ornamenti e ormai è pieno di decorazioni. Anche il mio cane Sinbad è ornato di campane! C’è un angelo natalizio, decorazione per la tavola e persino cuscini natalizi. Nella cucina, ci sono anche piatti con immagini di Babbo Natale.

As you can see, I’m preparing the house for Christmas. I just finished decorating the tree with my children. Over the years, I have collected a lot of ornaments and by now it is full of decorations. My dog Sinbad is also adorned with bells! There is a Christmas angel, table decoration, and even Christmas pillows. In the kitchen, there are also plates with pictures of Santa Clause.

Adoro decorare la casa con luci fatate. Sembra che ogni angolo della casa ha dettagli di Natale. Sul caminetto c’è una collezione di bambole di Babbo Natale. Davanti al camino c’è un cesto con le stelle di Natale. Mentre lavoro, ascolto e canto le canzoni di Natale, anche se sono un po’ stonate. Mi piace anche guardare tutti i vecchi film come “Una vita è meravigliosa” da Jimmy Stewart e “Il miracolo della 30th Street”.

I love decorating the house with fairy lights. It seems every corner of the house has Christmas details. On the mantelpiece is a collection of Santa Claus dolls. In front of the fireplace there is a basket with Christmas stars. While I work, I listen to and sing the Christmas songs, even if they are a little out of tune. I also like watching all the old movies like “A Life Is Wonderful” by Jimmy Stewart and “The Miracle of 30th Street”.

Ora vado a montare il presepe. Ragazzi siete pronti ad aiutarmi? Ogni anno ne preparo uno con figurine italiane. Costruisco l’ambientazione per le statue usando carta speciale stampate in Italia, piccole pietre e muschio raccolti dal giardino e paglia. Per strutturarlo utilizzo un vuoto scatole di scarpe che ho trovato in fondo all’armadio. Prima organizzo le scatole e poi metto la carta su di loro… Accartoccio un po’ la carta per dargli un aspetto naturale, che dà l’impressione di rocce, campi e grotte.

Now, I’m going to assemble the Presepe. Are you ready to help me? Every year I prepare one with Italian figurines. I build the setting for the statues using special paper printed in Italy, small stones and moss collected from the garden, and straw. To structure it, I use an empty shoe box that I found at the bottom of the closet. First, I organize the boxes and then put the paper on them… I crumple the paper a little to give it a natural look, which gives the impression of rocks, fields, and caves.

Ci vuole un po’ di pazienza per sistemare i contenitori nelle giuste posizioni e poi per fissare la carta. Ogni anno aggiungo novità al presepe. Questa volta ho deciso di creare un piccolo laghetto fatto di stagnola. Una volta è completata la base, posso mettere il muschio, la paglia e i sassi in una maniera disinvolta.

It takes a little patience to put the containers in the right positions and then to fix the paper. Every year I add novelties to the Nativity scene. This time I decided to create a small pond made of tin foil. Once the base is completed, I can add moss, straw, and stones casually.

Ora la scena è pronta per le statue di Maria, Giuseppe, i pastori, le mucche, le pecore e anche l’angelo. Come puoi vedere metto una luce dietro l’angelo per illuminare la scena e l’angelo.

Now the scene is ready for the statues of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, the cows, the sheep, and even the angel. As you can see, I put a light behind the angel to illuminate the scene and the angel.

A questo punto il presepe è quasi finito. Tutto è a posto…i personaggi sono ben organizzati. Mi manca solo la statuetta di Gesu. Ma non lo metterò ufficialmente in scena fino alla notte di Natale! L’ho messo lì per il video ma dopo lo toglierò perché come tradizione lui non dovrebbe entrare nella scena prima della vigilia di Natale. Anche non metterò i tre Re Magi…anche loro non entrano in scena fino al giorno dell’Epifania, il 6 gennaio, quando la Bibbia afferma che i Re magi finalmente arrivano a salutare Gesù e la sua famiglia nelle colline fuori di Betlemm

At this point, the crib is almost finished. Everything is in place…the characters are well organized. I only miss the statue of Jesus. But I’m not officially putting it on until Christmas night! I put him there now for the video but then after I remove him…as per tradition, he doesn’t get placed into the scene before Christmas Eve. I also will not put the three Magi Kings… They also do not enter the scene until the day of the Epiphany, January 6, when the Bible states that the Magi finally arrive to greet Jesus and his family in the hills outside Bethlehem.

Adesso che il presepe è stabilito, ho finito decorare la casa per Natale. Devo solo cucinare tutti i biscotti e compro alcuni regali per la famiglia!

Now that the Nativity scene is completed, I have finished decorating the house for Christmas. I just have to cook all the cookies and buy gifts for the family!

Prima di concludere, volevo mostrarvi una delle mie decorazioni preferite…la Befana. In America di solito non si festeggia l’Epifania e la Befana…ma mi piace questa tradizione. Una mia amica mi ha regalato questo bambola di Befana che ha comprato nei mercarti di Roma in Piazza Navona. Quindi adesso anche io accolgo la “bella brutta” Befana.

Before finishing this video, I wanted to show you one of my favorite holiday decorations…la Befana. In America, Epiphany and la Befana aren’t celebrated. But I like this tradition. A friend gave me this Befana doll she bought at the Christmas market in Piazza Navona in Rome. So now I celebrate la Befana, and I welcome the ugly beautiful Befana!
