A volte un viaggio in Italia è come tornare nel passato. Per me, questo fa parte del fascino dell’Italia. Recentemente ho avuto l’impressione di passare attraverso un portale, per tornare ai tempi del medioevo. È successo quando ho trascorso qualche settimana ad Arezzo, durante il periodo d’autunno quando gli aretini festeggiavano la Giostra del Saracino.
Sometimes a trip to Italy is like stepping into the past. For me, that is part of the charm of Italy. Recently I had the impression of passing through a portal back to medieval times. It happened during my stay in Arezzo last September when I witnessed the “Giostra del Saracino”

Ciao ragazzi, sono Melissa la studentessa matta. Come potete vedere dal libro che ho appena pubblicato intitolato “Dreaming Sophia” e tutti gli articoli che scrivo per il Matta Blog… e tutti i viaggi che faccio in Italia, l’Italia è sempre in cima della mia mente e sulla punta della mia lingua! Oggi vorrei parlarvi della giostra del saracino.
As you can see from the novel I just published entitled “Dreaming Sophia” and the articles I write almost daily for the Matta blog …as well all the trips I take to Italy…Italy is always top of my mind and on the tip of my tongue.
Today I want to tell you a bit about the Giostra del Saracino and show you some video I took last time I was in Arezzo. The Giostra del Saracino means the Joust of the Saracens.
Due volte all’anno, a giugno ed a settembre, i cittadini di Arezzo si vestono in farsetti medievali, pantaloni ampio e corsaletti per fare una sfilata sfarzosa e colorata in preparazione per la competizione storica che risale al mille tre cento. Infatti Dante ha scritto della Giostra nella Divina Comedia.
Twice a year, in June and in September, the citizens of Arezzo dress up in medieval doublets, pantaloons, and corsets to parade around the streets in preparation for a competition that dates back to the 1300s. In fact, Dante wrote of the joust in his Divine Comedy.
Le opinione diffusa è che la giostra del Saracino ha avuto origine dalle crociate. La storia ci dice che le incursioni dei Saraceni hanno raggiunto tutto il paese fino a Arezzo. Orginariamente la giostra sarebbe stato un tipo di addestramento militare per preparare gli Aretini per la guerra contro gli infedeli.
It is widely believed la Giostra Saraceno originated from the Crusades. Historical documentation tells us that the raids of the Saracens reached all the way up the boot, as far as Arezzo. Originally the joust would have been a military training ground to prepare the Aretini for battle against the infidels
Fin dall’inizio, nel corso del tempo, le regole di concorrenza di Arezzo non sono cambiate molto. La città è divisa in quattro quartieri che rappresentano le antiche famiglie nobili di Arezzo.
Since its inception, over the course of time, the rules of Arezzo’s competition have not changed much. The city is divided into quattro quartieri (four neighborhoods) that represent Arezzo’s ancient noble families.
Porta Crucifera – rosso e verde / The red and green gate
Porta del Foro – giallo e rosso / The yellow and crimson gate
Porta S. Andrea – bianca e verde / The white and green gate
Porta S.Spirito – giallo e blu / The yellow and blue gate
Ogni quartiere sceglie due giostratori che si allenano per l’evento per tutto l’anno. Inoltre, ogni quartiere sceglie tra le sue fila un assortimento di valetti, musicisti, sbandieratori, cavalieri e nobildonne di partecipare nelle sfilate nei giorni precedenti della gara per dare sostegno ai valorosi cavalieri.
Each neighborhood selects two jousters who train for the event throughout the year. In addition, each neighborhood selects from its ranks a vast assortment of footmen, musicians, valets, flag jugglers, knights, and ladies to march in the parades in the days prior to the event to support the gallant knights.
Durante la competitizione ogni giostratore galoppa il suo cavallo su una pista chiamata la “lizza”. È costruito in Piazza Grande, nel centro della città. Una settimana prima della giostra la piazza grande è riempita dalla sabbia e grande impalcature con le sedie che sono montate lungo i confini della piazza da dove i visitatori e cittadini d’Arezzo possono godersi lo spettacolo. Per prepararsi alla giostra, i cavalieri fanno le prove nella piazza.
During the competition, each jouster gallops his horse up a track in the Piazza Grande in the center of town. A week before the city’s large square is filled with packed dirt and sand and spectator stands are set up along the borders of the piazza from where visitors and citizens of Arezzo can enjoy the show. To prepare themselves for the joust, the riders on horseback practice in the piazza.
La sera prima della giostra, ciascune quartiere di Arezzo festeggia con una cena chiamata “La cena propiziatoria” . Che vuol dire questo? È la cena per augurare buona fortuna ai giostratori. Si tratta di una grigliata o pizza per strada. La gente si siede lunghi i tavoli, mangiano tutti insieme e dopo ballano e cantano. Ovunque si vada, si vede un mare di striscioni colorati. Tutti, non importa a quale quartiere si appartiene, diventano tifosi di questa concorrenza magica.
The evening before the joust, each of Arezzo’s four neighborhoods celebrates by holding a good luck dinner presided over by the neighborhood presidents and by the jousters themselves. It is a festive event with good food—a pizza or a barbeque, and there is dancing and singing in the streets. Everywhere you go you see a sea of colorful banners. Everyone, no matter to which neighborhood you belong, becomes a fan of this magical competition.
Il giorno della manifestazione, vestiti elegantemente come cavalieri medievali, i giostratori a turno attaccano un girevole manichino di legno chiamato il “Buratto” – che rappresenta il Re dell Indie/ L’obiettivo è quello di colpire il bersaglio detenuta dal manichino con la sua lancia di legno. A seconda della capacità e della precisione di ogni colpo, la squadra guadagna un certo numero di punti. Il compito è reso ancora più complicato dal manichino che porta con sé il mazzafrusto, un tipo di flagello. Se un cavaliere è troppo lento, si corre il rischio di essere colpito alla schiena dalla frusta.
On the day of the event, dressed elegantly as medieval knights, the jousters take turns attacking a swiveling “Buratto” the Saracen dummy that represents the King of the Indies. The object is to strike the scorecard held by the Saracen dummy squarely in the middle with the jouster’s wooden lance. Depending on the skill and accuracy of each strike, the team earns a certain number of points. The task is made even more complicated by the rotating dummy that carries with it the flail. If a rider is too slow, he is in danger of being hit in the back by the whip.
Alla fine, quando il vincitore è dichiarato il quartiere a cui il giocatore appartiene prende la lancia d’ora come premio. I membri del quartiere vincente, poi, vanno tutti insieme al Duomo, dove, ringraziano la Madonna della Consolazione, patrona della città, per la loro vittoria.
In the end, the winner is declared and the neighborhood to whom the jouster belongs claims the Golden Lance as its prize. Members of the winning neighborhood then parade through the streets of Arezzo, their destination being the Duomo where they give thanks to Our Lady of Consolation, the patron saint of the city for their victory.
Dopo la gara ad Arezzo le cose tornano alla normalità…ma ogni quartiere promette di vincere la prossima sfida. Anch’io ritornerò ad Arezzo per assistere alla giostra del prossimo anno.
Arezzo then settles back into its regular routine, each neighborhood vowing to return to win the next challenge). I too, will be returning to Arezzo to partake in next year’s giostra!
