I sette fratelli Cervi erano i figli di Alcide Cervi e Genoeffa Cocconi… nati a cavallo del secolo a Campegine nel Emilia-Romagna. C’erano anche due sorelle.
The seven Cervi Brothers were the sons of Alcide Cervi and Genoeffa Cocconi… born at the turn of the century in Campegine in Emilia-Romagna. There were also two sisters.
I Cervi erano una famiglia dei contadini che volevano migliorarsi. Hanno trovato nuovi modi per modernizzare il lavoro – per esempio erano i primi di comprare un trattore, e hanno cercato modo di irrigare i campi per coltivare meglio i raccolti.
The Cervi were a family of farmers who wanted to improve themselves. They found new ways to modernize the work – for example, they were the first to buy a tractor, and they looked for ways to irrigate the fields to grow crops better.
Politicamente erano anti-fascisti, uomini con profonde convinzioni democratiche. Quando il governo italiano firmò l’armistizio con gli alleati l’8 settembre 1943, i Fratelli Cervi, come molti altri, divennero membri più attivi della resistenza.
Politically they were anti-fascists, men with deep democratic convictions. When the Italian government signed an armistice with the allies on 8 September 1943, the Cervi Brothers, like many others, became more active members of the resistance.
Aldo, uno dei Fratelli aprì una biblioteca per diffondere informazione agli altri contadini. Furono contro Mussolini e distribuirono volantini per istruire gli impiegati nelle fattorie di Emilia-Romagna. La zona era importantissima per il sviluppo della industria durante la Guerra e i Tedeschi volevano controllarla.
Aldo, one of the Brothers opened a library to spread information to the other farmers. During the war they were against Mussolini and distributed leaflets to educate the employees on the farms of Emilia-Romagna. The area was very important for the development of industry during the war and the Germans wanted to control it.
Durante la Guerra mondiale i fratelli Cervi prestarono parte attiva alla resistenza pagando con la vita la loro fede agli ideali di libertà e giustizia sociale che erano stati tramandi fin dall’infanzia dal padre.
During World War the brothers Cervi took an active part in the resistance, paying with their lives for their faith in the ideals of freedom and social justice that had been handed down from childhood by their father.
Nel novembre 1943, la loro casa fu circondata dalle autorità fasciste e furono portati in carcere nella vicina città di Reggio Emilia insieme al padre.
In November 1943, their home was surrounded by the fascist authorities and they were taken to prison in the nearby city of Reggio Emilia together with their father.
A dicembre un segretario fascista fu ucciso da un solo sicario a Modena. (Siccario vuol dire un “sniper” — solo un uomo con un fucile.)
In December, a fascist secretary was killed by a single hitman in Modena. Siccario means a “sniper” – just a man with a rifle.
Per rappresaglia, tutti e sette i Fratelli Cervi, insieme a un disertore, furono portati al poligono di tiro a Reggio Emilia e fucilati.
In retaliation, all seven of the Cervi Brothers, along with a defector, were taken to the shooting range in Reggio Emilia and shot.
Il padre che era malata, è rimasto in carcere è non fu ucciso. Alcune settimane dopo, scappò dopo la prigione fu bombardato dagli alleati. È stato lui, di raccontare in seguito la storia dei suoi sette figli.
The father who was sick remained in prison and wasn’t killed. Several weeks later, he escaped after the prison was bombed by the allies. It was he who later told the story of his seven children.

Tutti e sette I Fratelli sono stati decorati con Medagli d’argento al valor militare.All seven Brothers were decorated with silver medals for military valor.
