Oggi sono lieta di presentare un guest post di Eleonora, una delle insegnanti di Homestay con cui collaboro, che vive in Emilia-Romagna. Il Homestay di Eleonora a Ferrara è un’opportunità per vivere in una parte d’Italia nord, lungo il Po di Volan, un ramo del Po il principale fiume, in una città situata vicino a Bologna e Ravenna. La città ha molto fascino medievale dove ci sono numerosi palazzi risalenti al Rinascimento quando ospitò la corte della Casa d’Este.
Today I’m pleased to bring you a guest post by Eleonora, one of the homestay teachers I work with, who lives in Emilia-Romagna. Eleonora’s Homestay in Ferrara is an opportunity to live in northern Italy, along the Po di Volan river, a branch of the main Po river, in a town located near Bologna and Ravenna. The town has lots of medieval charm and features numerous palaces dating from the Renaissance when it hosted the court of the House of Este.

Emilia-Romagna has had the fewest cases of
the Covid virus reported in Italy.
Ferrara, oltre ad essere una graziosa città ricca di storia e di tradizione, è stata poco colpita dalla pandemia rispetto ad altre città del nord. Per questo motivo è diventata oggetto di uno studio per questa sua particolare immunità al Covid-19. A giugno del 2020, dopo il primo lockdown che ha interessato gran parte delle città italiane, qui si registravano “soltanto” mille casi, nonostante la sua vicinanza a zone “rosse” che in quel periodo riportavano un altissimo numero di contagi.
Ferrara, in addition to being a lovely city, rich in history and tradition, has not been as affected by the pandemic compared to other Italian cities in the north. Because of this, it has become the subject of study because of its particular immunity to Covid-19. In June 2020, after the first lockdown that affect most Italian cities, there were “only” a thousand cases here, despite its proximity to “red” (total lockdown) areas that at that time reported a very high number of infections.
Una delle maggiori ipotesi per questo apparentemente inspiegabile fenomeno potrebbe essere la presenza di una elevata percentuale della popolazione portatrice di talassemia, una condizione del sangue in cui i globuli rossi sono più piccoli rispetto al normale; altra possibile spiegazione, potrebbe essere che a Ferrara l’area universitaria è stata prontamente chiusa subito dopo i primi casi, favorendo un contenimento dell’impennata di contagi verificatisi in altre città.
One of the major hypotheses for this apparently inexplicable phenomenon could be the presence of a high percentage of the population carrying thalassemia, a blood condition in which red blood cells are smaller than normal; another possible explanation could be that the university in Ferrara was immediately closed after the first cases, that helped to contain the surge in infections that occurred in other cities.
Come insegnante di scuola superiore, posso infatti affermare che anche questo anno nel nostro istituto scolastico i casi sono stati molto contenuti e non ci sono state particolari problematiche relative alla pandemia: sono state adottate tutte le misure sanitarie necessarie e le lezioni sono state sospese seguendo i dati epidemiologici regionali che, diversamente da Ferrara, in altre città della nostra regione erano molto più alti.
As a high school teacher, I can in fact say that even this year in our school the cases have been very limited and there have been no particular problems related to the pandemic; all the necessary health measures have been adopted and lessons have been suspended following the regional epidemiological data which, unlike Ferrara, in other cities of our region were much higher.
Io e la mia famiglia stiamo tutti bene e anche durante il lockdown della primavera del 2020 ce la siamo cavata senza nemmeno un raffreddore! Un punto a nostro vantaggio è sicuramente anche la posizione invidiabile della nostra abitazione che, pur essendo limitrofa al centro, gode del basso inquinamento, della privacy e della distanza dalle trafficate strade della città.
My family and I are all fine and even during the spring 2020 lockdown we got a way without even a cold! A point to our advantage is certainly also the enviable position of our house which, despite being adjacent to the city center, enjoys low pollution, and is quite private and removed from the busy city streets.
Con i nostri ospiti siamo sempre attenti a tenere la dovuta distanza di sicurezza, indossare la mascherina durante i momenti di convivialità come il pranzo o la cena, e inoltre offriamo un grandissimo giardino privato dove potersi rilassare in tutta tranquillità.
With our guests, we are always careful to keep the necessary safety distance, wear a mask during moments of fun spent together such as before and after dinner, and we also offer a huge private garden where you can relax in peace.
