Questo è un nuovo post di una serie da parte dei lettori che parlano delle loro ragioni per imparare l’italiano. Oggi vorrei farvi conoscere Ellen Chapman. Ellen è cresciuta in una famiglia italiana nel nord-est. Da quando era piccola ha sentito sua madre e sua nonna parlare in italiano ogni volta che la famiglia erano insieme. Finalmente all’età di 55 anni Ellen ha deciso di frequentare una scuola di lingua italiana a Lecce, in Italia per cominciare sul serio l’apprendimento della lingua. Oggi la sua avventura di imparare la lingua continua e Ellen dice che non si smette mai. Secondo Ellen il segreto per imparare la lingua è fare qualcosa in Italiano ogni giorno e non rinunciare mai. Dice anche che quello che fai dovrebbe essere divertente, se non lo è smetti di farlo. L’apprendimento della lingua prima di tutto dovrebbe essere divertente!

This is a new post in a series written by readers of the blog in which they explain their reasons for learning Italian. Ellen grew up in an Italian family in the northeast, hearing her mother and grandmother speak Italian whenever the family visited. Finally, at the age of 55, she went to a language immersion school in Lecce, Italy, and began seriously studying Italian. Today that quest continues and Ellen says it will never end. According to Ellen the secret to learning Italian is to do something in Italian every single day and never give up. And if what you are doing is not fun, switch it up. Language learning has to be and is fun.

Sono molto legata all’ italia. E’ una cosa profonda dentro di me. Recentamente ho imparato che sono una cittadina dall’italia perche’ la linea jure sanguinis dei miei antenati Italiani è intatto. Era sempre una cittadina dall’italia, ma è necessario trovare i documenti che lo provano.

I am very connected to Italy. It is something deep inside me. Recently I learned that I am a citizen of Italy because the bloodline from my Italian ancestors is intact. I have always been a citizen of Italy but it is necessary to find the documents that prove it.

Quando mi accingevo a trovare tutti i documenti che sono necessari per la cittadinanza doppio jure sanguinis mi sento molto sentimentale. Pensavo ai miei parenti in italia ed il coraggio che avevano a venire qui. Erano in un paese lontano d’italia, con una lingua straniera, e i tradizioni straniere. Quando arrivarono non avevano molti soldi, neanche un posto per vivere. Ma erano sopravvissuti.

When I was preparing to find all the necessary documents for dual citizenship via jure sanguinis I felt very sentimental. I thought of my relatives in Italy and the courage they had to come here. They were in a country far from Italy, with a strange language, and strange traditions. When they arrived they did not have much money or even a place to live. But they were survivors.

Sempre ammiravo molto mia nonna perche’ ando’ negli stati uniti dall’ italia quando aveva 24 anni con la sua piccola figlia. Mio nonno era gia qui. Nonna non sapeva la lingua, non sapeva neanche scrivere, leggere o come fare la matematica. Ma era molto intelligente ed imparava l’ inglese e parecchia matematica.

I have always admired greatly my grandmother because she came to the U.S. from Italy when she was 24 with her young daughter. My grandfather was already here. My grandmother did not know the language, she did not even know how to write or read or do the math. But she was very smart and learned English and a fair amount of math.

Ci sono molte regole per questo processo e non sono chiare. Non e’ facile trovare i documenti dagli anni 1800 e la prima parte del 1900. Ma provo a trovarli. Fortunatamente ho trovato un gruppo a Facebook, “Dual US Italian Citizenship” che aiutami. Mi chiedo perche’ sto facendo questa cosa quando è un po’ costosa ed anche una grande sfida? Lo faccio perche’ il mio cuore è italiano.

There are many rules for this process and they are not very clear. It is not easy finding documents from the 1800s and the early part of the 1900s. But I am trying to find them. Fortunately, I found a group on Facebook, “Dual US Italian Citizenship” that is helping me. I ask myself why I am doing this because it is a bit costly and also a big challenge. I am doing it because my heart is Italian.

Ho iniziato a imparare italiano dal 2009 perche’ volevo andare in italia e parlare con la gente nella citta’ dei miei nonni. Adesso e’ molto utile capire e scrivere la lingua. E’ anche una grande sfida imparare una nuova lingua quando una persona ha più di sessanta anni e vive in un paese dove e’ difficile trovare l’opportunita’ di parlare la lingua. Fortunatamente l’internet e’ molto utile perche’ posso guardare i film italiani, ascolto la radio dall’italia ed anche leggo i giornali d’italia ogni giorno.

I began learning Italian in 2009 because I wanted to go to Italy and talk with the people in my grandparent’s town. Now it is very useful to understand how to write in Italian. It is also a big challenge to learn a new language when a person is over 60 and lives in a country where it is hard to find the opportunity to speak the language. Fortunately, the internet is very helpful because I can watch Italian movies, listen to the radio from Italy and also read Italian newspapers every day.

Il motivo per tutto è perchè sono italiana nella mia anima. Sono italiana da jure sanguinis. Anche i miei figli e nipoti avranno l’opportunita’ lavorare nel Unione Europea se ci voglianno. Eventualmente avro’ il passaporto italiano ed una carta d’identità da Taurasi di Avellino. E’ necessario avere pazienza, ed essere intraprendente . La cosa piu importante è di godere il processo e la gente che incontrero’ durante questa ricerca. E’ una ricerca che nutre profondamente la mia anima.

My reason for everything is because I am Italian in my soul. I am Italian by blood. Also, my sons and grandchildren will have the opportunity to work in the EU if they want. Eventually, I will have my Italian passport and an identity card from Mirabella Eclano in Avellino. It is necessary to be patient and resourceful. The most important thing is to enjoy the process and the people that I meet during this search. It is a search that deeply nurtures my soul.
