Una delle cose che preferisco fare quando sono ad Arezzo è andare alla Fiera Antiquaria Proprio come il personaggio di Nora, il protagonista del mio romanzo “Waking Isabella” ambientato in questa città Toscana, mi piace camminare tra le bancarelle del mercato alla ricerca di tesori.
One of my favorite things to do when I’m in Arezzo is to attend the Fiera Antiquaria. Just like my character Nora, the protagonist of my new book “Waking Isabella” set in this Tuscan town, I like to take my time and wander through all the booths in the market looking for treasures.

Il fascino delle porte segrete e dei compartimenti nascosti è in giro sin dai tempi antichi; migliaia di anni fa, gli egiziani nascondevano le stanze nelle profondità delle loro piramidi. Mentre i compartimenti nascosti nei mobili non si trovano nelle case di tutti oggi, il desiderio di avere passaggi e nascondigli segreti non è cambiato.
The fascination with secret doors and hidden compartments has been around since ancient times; thousands of years ago, the Egyptians hid chambers deep in their pyramids. While hidden compartments in furniture may not be found in everyone’s home nowadays, the desire to have passageways and secret stashes haven’t dwindled.
Fin da bambina anch’io sono stata affascinata da casse e scatole che nascondono cassetti, e alla Fiera Antiquaria sono andata in giro a cercare pezzi del genere. Sono stata fortunata quando ho incontrato un uomo che vendeva una bellissima cassapanca del XV secolo che conteneva tali scomparti segreti. Ho imparato da lui che in Italia questi pezzi si chiamano “cassetti dei segreti.” Mi sono inamorata della cassapanca, ma sfortunatamente non ci stava nella mia valigia…ed era un po’ fuori dal mio budget.
Ever since I was a child, I too have been fascinated by chests and boxes that conceal hidden drawers, and when I was at the Antique Fair, I was scouting around looking for such pieces. I was in luck when I met a man selling a beautiful 15th-century chest that contained such secret compartments. I learned from him in Italy these pieces are called cassetti dei segreti. I fell in love with the chest of drawers, but unfortunately, it wouldn’t quite fit in my suitcase…and it was a bit out of my price range.
Così, mi sono accontenta di alcune chiacchierare con quel’uomo, e ho imparato che molti ebanisti inglesi, francesi e spagnoli hanno cominciato ad aggiungere questi nascondigli nei mobili che realizzavano nel periodo barocco. L’uomo sosteneva che questa pratica era iniziata dopo che l’influenza del mobile italiano li aveva raggiunti. Secondo lui, i compartimenti segreti confacevano al gusto italiano, e molti mobilieri italiani producevano armadietti, piccolo e grandi, con cassetti nascosti di questo genere.
So, I contented myself by chatting with the man, and I learned that many cabinetmakers, English, French, and Spanish turned their attention to adding these hiding places to the pieces they crafted in the Baroque period. The man contended that it began after the Italian furniture influence reached them. According to him, secret compartments appealed to the Italian temperament, and many Italian furniture makers made cabinets, small and large, with hidden drawers and the like.
Nella lingua italiana, ci sono un paio di expressioni interessanti che derivano dal concetto di cassetti nascosti nei mobili—cioè “cassetti dei segreti.”
In the Italian language, there are a couple of interesting idioms that derive from the concept of hidden drawers in furniture—“cassetti dei segreti.”
“Nel cassetto” significa in inglese: “mettere qualcosa sul fornello”… o dimenticare qualcosa per un po’—lasciare nel dimenticatoio.
“Nel cassetto” means to put something on the back burner…to forget about something for a while.
E poi c’è la mia espressione preferita: “Avere un sogno nel cassetto.” Che vuol dire cìo? Significa: avere una speranza o un desiderio segreto o qualcosa che vi state nascondendo dentro di voi e non siete ancora pronti a condividere con gli altri. O forse avete un sogno che vorresti realizzare tantissimo, ma vi sembra impossibile e non sapete come cominciare.
And then there is my favorite expression: “Avere un sogno nel cassetto.” Quite literally it means: “to have a dream in a drawer.” It means to have a secret hope or desire or something that you are keeping tucked away deep inside of you and aren’t quite ready to share with anyone else. O perhaps you have a dream you want come true, but it seems impossible and you don’t know how to get started.
È bello avere sogni segreti, ma ad un certo punto è importante condividerli con gli altri. Credo che quando svelate i vostri desideri per esprimerli ad alta voce, si verifica una reazione a catene, e il mondo cospira ad aiutarvi a realizzarli. C’è un’altra espressione: “i sogni nel cassetto fanno la muffa.” Non dovreste nascondere un sogno per sempre.
It is lovely to have secret dreams, but at a certain point, it is important to share them with those around you. I believe when you do reveal your desires and express them out loud, a ripple effect begins to take place, and the world conspires to help you make them come true. There is another expression: “dreams in a drawer get moldy.” You shouldn’t hide a dream forever.
Siamo alla vigilia dell’anno nuovo. Prendete questo momento per fare il punto di dove siete e cosa volete che accada nel 2018. Qualunque cosa sia…se volete parlare o leggere l’italiano meglio, o forse andare in Italia…è l’ora per svelare il vostro “sogno nel cassetto” e realizzarlo.
On the eve of the old year, take stock of where you are and want you would like to happen in 2018.
Whatever it is, whether you want to speak or read Italian better, or perhaps you want to travel to Italy…now is the time to reveal your “sogno nel cassetto” and realize your dream!
