Ieri sera sono andata a San Francisco al prestigioso negozio “Emporio Armani” per sentire Dianne Hales parlare del suo nuovo libro: “Mona Lisa: A Life Discovered”. In un post e un podcast precedente ho già parlato molto del nuovo progetto di Dianne e nel podcast “Tutti matti per l’italiano” in cui faccio una recensione del libro, Dianne stessa ha registrato un pezzo in cui lei parla direttamente ai lettori del Matta Blog e racconta la sua passione nello scoprire la vera donna che si cela dietro il famoso sorriso, ancora oggi enigmatico. Last night I went to the prestigious store “Emprio Armani” to hear Dianne Hales talk about her new book: “Mona Lisa: A Life Discovered”. In a previous post and podcast I have already spoken a lot about Dianne’s new project and in the podcast “Tutti matti per l’italiano” in which I review the book, Dianne herself makes a guest appearance and talks directly to my listeners about her desire to know the real woman behind the famous smile that still today is still so enigmatic. L’evento di ieri sera era un affare molto raffinato, soprattutto perché ha avuto luogo presso il negozio Armani nel centro di San Francisco. Perché Dianne ha scelto questo posto per parlare del suo libro? Ci ha spiegato che frequentava “Italingua” una scuola d’italiano, (che anch’io ho frequentato in passato) a solo pochi passi da Armani, dove entrava spesso per prendere un caffè prima delle lezioni e per guardare con desiderio i vestiti eleganti. Lei ha scherzato sul fatto che non avrebbe mai immaginato di potersi indossare dei vestiti così eleganti perché, essendo una donna molto minuta e bassa, pensava che lo stile di Armani fosse più adatto alle donne con le gambe lunghe lunghe. Però, poco a poco i vestiti firmati Armani si sono fatti strada nel suo armadio. Adesso ogni volta che indossa un vestito con l’etichetta “Armani”, dice ridendo, che l’apprendimento della lingua italiana diventa ancora più facile! Se chi si veste come un italiano, diventa italiano – dentro e fuori! Ha senso – vestirsi per successo!
Last night’s event was a very refined affair, especially since took place at Armani in the heart of San Francisco! Why did Dianne choose this place to talk about her book? She explained to us that when she attended “Italingua” an Italian school (that I have also attended in the past) just a few blocks away from Armani, where she used to go to sip a coffee before class and to gaze longingly at the elegant clothes. She joked that she never thought she would be able to dress in styles so extravagant because she is a short diminutive woman, thinking that Armani’s styles are more suited for women with extra long legs. But, little by little clothes with the Armani brand name began to creep into her closet. Now when she wears clothes that bear the Armani label, she says with a laugh, that learning Italian is much easier! If you you dress like and Italian, you become Italian – inside and out! There is merit to that – dress for success!
Ad ogni modo, qualsiasi cosa Dianne indossi, è sempre una donna alla moda, proprio come la Gioconda – che ha catturato la sua immaginazione, costringendola a scrivere un libro. Mi è piaciuto sentirla parlare del suo libro ed è stato anche un grande piacere per me conoscere suo marito e sua figlia Julia. Julia è molto carina e anche una donna in gamba. Si vede che nutre tanto affetto per sua madre e sostiene in tutti i suoi progetti. Ho tre figli maschi e un giorno spero di avere nuore come Julia!
At any rate, whatever Dianne wears, she is a stylish lady, much like the woman – la Gioconda – who captured her imagination and inspired her to write a book. I enjoyed listening to her speak about her book in person and it was my great pleasure to meet her husband and daughter Julia. Julia is delightful. You can see right away that she has a lot of love for her mother and fully supports her many projects. I have three boys and one day I hope to have daughters-in-law like Julia!
Dopo aver passato una splendida serata in buona compagnia, ho lasciato Dianne all’Emporio Armani, dove lei ha continuata ad autografare dei libri per i suoi ammiratori. Mentre camminavo verso il BART (il treno che mi porta a casa dall’altra parte della baia di San Francisco) mi sono goduta la confusione della città che, anche a tarda sera, era piena di giocondità e allegria. Vicino alla mia fermata, e chissà perché, un proprietario di un negozio mi ha chiamato in Italiano! Mi sono fermata stupita e gli ho domandato in italiano: “Perché mi stai parlando in italiano?“. Ha stretto le spalle e poi per qualche minuto, sull’incrocio tra Grant e Powell, abbiamo avuto una bella chiacchierata in italiano! Forse è vero…dopo essere stata nel negozio di Armani tra i vestiti eleganti, sorseggiando prosecco, e dopo aver ascoltato Dianne parlare di Monna Lisa per alcune ore, sembravo più italiana!!
After spending a splendid evening in good company, I left Dianne at Emprio Armani, where she continued to sign books for her fans. As I walked toward the BART (the train that takes me to the other side of the San Francisco Bay) I enjoyed the hubbub of city life, that even late at night was hopping and full of vitality. Near my train stop, who knows why, a store owner called out to me in Italian! I stopped in amazement and replied to him in Italian: “Why are you speaking to me in Italian?” He shrugged his shoulders and then for a few minutes at the corner of Grant and Powell we chit-chatted in Italian. Perhaps it is true…after spending an evening at Armani amongst the elegant clothes, sipping prosecco, and after having listened to Dianne speak about Monna Lisa for a couple of hours, I seemed more Italian!
