Sto leggendo  il famoso poema di Dante
la Divina Commedia. 

Ecco la traduzione in inglese:

Midway upon the journey of our life
I found myself within a forest dark,
For the straightforward pathway had been lost.
Ah me! How hard a thing it is to say
What was this forest savage, rough, and stern,
Which in the very thought renews the fear!

Queste righe sono dal primo canto di Dante della Divina Commedia. Cioè il poema epico scritto da Dante che iniziò nel 1308 e completato nel 1320 un anno prima della sua morte. È ampiamente considerato il capolavoro preminente della letteratura italiana ed è visto come una delle più grandi opere della letteratura nel mondo intero!

These lines are from Dante’s first canto of the Divine Comedy. That is of course the epic Poem written by Dante that he began in 1308 and completed in 1320 a year before his death. It is widely considered the preeminent work of Italian literature and is seen as one of the greatest works of literature in the entire world!

La visione immaginativa di Dante dell’aldilà rappresenta la visione del mondo medievale, come si era sviluppata nella Chiesa occidentale da parte nel quattordicesimo secolo. Il poema di Dante ha anche contribuito a stabilire la lingua toscana, con la quale è scritto, come la lingua italiana standard.

Dante’s imaginative vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. Dante’s poem also helped establish the Tuscan language, in which it is written, as the standardized Italian language.

Avete mai letto il poema? Si tratta di un’allegoria medievale di un viaggio dell’anima per avvicinarsi a Dio. È diviso in tre parti: Inferno, Purgatorio e Paradiso.

Have you ever read the poem? It is a medieval allegory of the soul’s journey to find god. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.

Il poema comincia la sera prima del Venerdì Santo nel milletrecento, “a metà strada lungo il percorso della nostra vita” Dante ha trentacinque anni, si è perso in un bosco scuro assalito da bestie…un leone, un leopardo, e una lupa che non può eludere, e incapace di trovare la ““diritta via” anche traducibile come “modo giusto” alla salvezza.

The poem begins on the night before Good Friday in the year 1300, “halfway along our life’s path”. Dante is thirty-five years old, lost in a dark wood assailed by beasts … a lion, a leopard, and a she-wolf which he cannot evade, and unable to find the “straightway”– also translatable as “right way” – to salvation.

Consapevole che sta rovinando se stesso e che sta cadendo in un “luogo basso” dove il sole non splende, Dante è finalmente salvato da Virgilio e con lui inizia un viaggio agli inferi. La punizione di ogni peccato nell’Infermo è un contrappasso, un esempio simbolico di giustizia poetica; per esempio, gli indovini devono camminare con la testa rivolta all’indietro, incapaci di vedere ciò che c’è avanti, perché era quello che avevano cercato di fare nella vita.

Conscious that he is ruining himself and that he is falling into a “low place” where the sun is silent, Dante is at last rescued by Virgil, and the two of them begin their journey to the underworld. Each sin’s punishment in Inferno is a contrappasso, a symbolic instance of poetic justice; for example, fortune-tellers have to walk with their heads on backward, unable to see what is ahead, because that was what they had tried to do in life.

Alla fine Dante è guidato fuori dall’Inferno ed è dato nelle mani di Beatrice, che lo guida in Paradiso.

Eventually, Dante is guided out of Hell and is given into the care of Beatrice who guides him into Paradiso.

Beatrice era una donna reale di Firenze, Dante si era realmente innamorato di lei. È piuttosto una storia romantica. Secondo la leggenda, i due si erano incontrati quando Dante aveva nove anni e Beatrice aveva solo otto anni! Ma il loro amore è stato platonico. Beatrice è stata promessa ad un altro e il padre di Dante voleva dei nipoti e scelse un’altra donna come sposa per suo figlio.

Beatrice was a real-life florentine woman with who Dante fell in love. It is quite a romantic story. According to legend, the two first met when Dante was 9 and Beatrice was only 8. But their love was not meant. Beatrice was promised to another and Dante’s father wanted grandchildren and chose another woman for his son to marry.

Comunque Dante non aveva mai smesso di amare Beatrice e ogni giorno si aggirava per Firenze sperando di intravvederla o parlarle. Poi un giorno, mentre stava ai piedi del Ponte Vecchio Beatrice passò con le sue amiche. Questa volta, si fermò e parlò con Dante.

But still, Dante never stopped loving Beatrice and each day he wandered about Florence hoping he might catch a glimpse of her or speak to her. Then one day as he stood at the foot of the Ponte Vecchio Bridge Beatrice passed by with her friends. But this time, she stopped and spoke with Dante.

Si dice che Dante fossi così entusiasta e felice di aver finalmente avuto una bella chiacchierata con la sua ammirevole Beatrice, che tornato a casa quella notte fece un sogno che gli avrebbe dato l’ispirazione per scrivere il più grande poema del mondo – la Divina Commedia!

It is said that Dante was so thrilled and happy to have at long last exchanged words with his beautiful Beatrice that he returned home to his rooms and that night dreamed a dream that would give him the inspiration to write the world’s greatest poem, La Divina Commedia!

Dante visse a Firenze in un periodo della storia pieno di intrighi politici complessi. A causa delle sue alleanze, alla fine fu costretto a lasciare la città di nascita – un altro amore della sua vita! Povero Dante! Fu esiliato dai suoi concittadini e vagò per l’Italia come un vagabondo prima di arrivare finalmente a Verona dove visse i suoi ultimi anni.

Dante lived in Florence during a time of complex political intrigues. Because of his alliances, eventually, he was forced to leave the city of his birth – another love of his life! Poor Dante! He was exiled by his countrymen and wandered aimlessly about Italy like a vagrant, before finally arriving in Verona where he lived out his final years.

È per questo che si troverà una statua di Dante, non solo a Firenze di fronte alla chiesa di Santa Croce, ma anche a Verona in Piazza dei Signori.

That is why you will find a statue of Dante not only in Florence in front of the church of Santa Croce but also in Verona in the Piazza dei Signori.
