Città di fango. Città degli angeli – Flood and Mud in Genova

Questa settimana Genova è una città di fango. Dopo tre anni la città è stata allagata di nuovo e un uomo è morto. C’è stato un danno stimato in milioni di euro. Ma c’è solidarietà tra gli italiani, se non uno dal governo italiano. Centinaia di ragazzi e ragazze sono arrivati a Genova per spalare fango, pulire cantine e contribuire a spostare le auto danneggiate. Sono arrivati a fare qualsiasi cosa fosse necessaria per aiutare i cittadini di Genova a sopravvivere questo disastro recente.

This week Genoa is a city of mud. After three years the city has flooded again and a man has died. There has been damage estimated in the tens of millions of euros. But there is solidarity amongst the Italians on a grassroots level, if not one by the Italian government. Hundreds of boys and girls have arrived in Genoa to shovel mud, clean cellars, and help move damaged cars. They have arrived to do just about anything it takes to help the citizens of Genoa survive this most recent disaster.

Chi sono gli angeli del fango? Questo nome poetico richiama i volontari e i giovani che hanno contribuito a salvare Firenze dal disastro del 1966, quando l’Arno rovesciato le sue sponde lasciando una tonnellate di detriti, olio e fango sulla sua scia. Come gli angeli nel 1965 a Firenze questi nuovi angeli che sono venuti a Genova sono studenti di scuole superiori e università. Non fanno parte di una specifica associazione o partito politico. Semplicemente si chiamano “cittadini di Genova.”

Who are the mud angels? This poetic name recalls the volunteers and young people who helped dig Florence out of the 1965 disaster when the Arno spilled its banks dumping tons of debris, oil and mud in its wake. Like the 1965 angels of Florence, these new angels who have alighted in Genoa are students of high schools and Universities. They are not part of a specific association or political party. They simply call themselves “citizens of Genoa”.

I giovani italiani sanno che cosa da fare. Ora sarebbe se il governo italiano potesse seguire il loro esempio e spalare il fango dalle camere del parlamento e fare una differenza nel processo di governo.

Italian youth know how to get things done. Now if only the Italian government could follow their example and shovel the mud out of the parliament chambers and make a difference in their governing process.
