Festeggiare dodici anni “matti”!

Quest’anno è il dodicesimo anniversario
della nascita di Studentessa Matta!

This year marks the 12th anniversary
of the Studentessa Matta Italian Blog!

Il blog di Studentessa Matta è cresciuto parecchio da quando l’ho iniziato dodici anni fa. Ho cominciato a scrivere in italiano e inglese per condividere il mio “matto” percorso di apprendimento delle lingue e per motivare gli altri ad imparare anche la lingua. Oltre alle discussioni su grammatica, vocabolario e metodi di apprendimento online e offline, ho avuto il piacere di scrivere articoli su tradizioni italiane, cultura, festival, storia, arte, film, libri e notizie sociali che suscitano il mio interesse.

The Studentessa Matta blog has grown quite a bit since I started it twelve years ago. I began writing in Italian and English to share my “crazy” language-learning journey and motivate others to learn the language too. In addition to discussions about grammar, vocabulary, and online and offline methods to learn, it’s been my pleasure to write articles about Italian traditions, culture, festivals, history, art, films, books, and social news that pique my interest.

Lungo la strada, il blog si è espanso fino a includere un canale YouTube Matta, Podcast, Facebook e Pinterest pagine, e un Twitter e Instagram feed. Circa due anni dopo aver scritto il Blog Matta, le scuole italiane in Italia hanno iniziato a mettersi in contatto con me, volendo collaborare. E così hanno avuto inizio i Programmi Matta Small Group Italian Language Immersion e le Esperienze Matta Italian Homestay. Negli ultimi anni, ho coordinato programmi di immersione linguistica a Lucca, Arezzo, Firenze, Montepulciano, Roma, Lecce, Venezia e Ascoli Piceno. Ho anche viaggiato molto in Italia – da Bergamo alla Sicilia – per visitare i miei numerosi amici italiani e i miei insegnanti di Homestay.

Along the way, the blog expanded to include a Matta YouTube Channel, Podcast, Facebook and Pinterest pages, and a Twitter and Instagram feed. About two years into writing the Matta Blog, Italian schools in Italy began reaching out to me, wanting to collaborate. And thus began the Matta Small Group Italian Language Immersion Programs and Matta Italian Homestay Experiences. Over the past years, I’ve coordinated language immersion programs in Lucca, Arezzo, Florence, Montepulciano, Rome, Lecce, Venice, and Ascoli Piceno. I have also traveled extensively in Italy — from Bergamo to Sicilia — to visit my numerous Italian friends and Homestay teachers. 

Poi cinque anni fa, scrivere articoli per il blog Matta mi ha dato la fiducia e l’ispirazione per andare oltre i post su internet per scrivere e pubblicare quattro romanzi ambientati in Italia – Dreaming Sophia [Firenze], Waking Isabella [Arezzo], Eternally Artemisia [Montepulciano/Roma]e La vita segreta di Sofonisba Anguissola [Cremona, Spagna, Sicilia]. Tutti e quattro i romanzi hanno vinto il premio Reader Views, e il secondo libro, Il Risveglio di Isabella, l’ho tradotto in italiano e venduto nel museo della Giostra ad Arezzo. Diventare un autore pubblicato ha aperto la porta a discorsi pubblici, interviste radio, e anche la possibilità di incontrarsi di persona, parlare e corrispondere con Sophia Loren – in italiano, ovviamente! 

Then about five years ago, penning articles for the Matta blog gave me the confidence and the inspiration to move beyond internet postings to write and publish four novels set in Italy — Dreaming Sophia [Florence], Waking Isabella [Arezzo], Eternally Artemisia [Montepulciano/Rome], and The Secret Life of Sofonisba Anguissola [Cremona, Spain, Sicilia]. All four novels have won Reader Views awards, and the second book, Il risveglio di Isabella, I translated into Italian and is sold in the Jousting museum in Arezzo. Becoming a published author has opened doors to speaking engagements, radio interviews, and even the opportunity to meet in person, speak and correspond with Sophia Loren — in Italian, of course! 

Dodici anni fa, avevo deciso, senza aspettative, di scrivere in italiano sull’Italia. Ho cominciato come un studentessa impaziente di imparare e sono diventata un’insegnante esperta e una guida. Passo dopo passo, post dopo post, ho imparato più dell’Italia e la lingua. Ho abbracciato con entusiasmo ogni nuovo progetto creativo, programma e esperienza di viaggio per spingermi oltre, per esplorare nuovi orizzonti e per portare nuovi contenuti ai lettori. È sempre stato il mio obiettivo rendere l’apprendimento della lingua italiana divertente, istruttivo e gratificante.

Twelve years ago, I set out on a path, without expectations, to write in Italian about Italy. I started as a student impatient to learn and became an experienced language tutor and guide. Step by step, post by post, I learned more about Italy — the country and the language. I enthusiastically embraced each new creative project, program, and travel experience to push myself further to explore new horizons and to bring fresh content to readers. It has always been my goal to make learning Italian fun, informative and rewarding.

Ora, gli studenti mi cercano per insegnare loro l’italiano. Attraverso le lezioni online e il Matta Italian Book Club, lavoro con gli studenti per aiutarli a capire grammatica, idiomi e vocabolario in modo che possano comunicare più spontaneo e suonare come madrelingua. 

Now, students seek me out to teach them Italian. Through online lessons and the Matta Italian Book Club, I work with students to help them understand grammar, idioms, and vocabulary so that they can communicate more spontaneously and sound like native speakers. 

Ho incontrato persone incredibili negli ultimi dodici anni. Questi amici viaggiano sempre con me arricchendo la mia vita. Ho amato ogni minuto del viaggio, e ora non vedo l’ora di vedere cosa c’è dietro la curva e dove questo blog “Matta” mi porterà nel 2023! Certamente, mi porterà in Italia a giugno e settembre a Lucca, Arezzo e Montepulciano!

I’ve met some incredible people during the past twelve years. These friends continue to travel with me enriching my life. I’ve loved every minute of the journey, and now I can’t wait to see what is next around the bend and where this “Matta” blog will take me in 2023! Most certainly, it will take me back to Italy in June and September to Lucca, Arezzo, and Montepulciano!

12 things the Studentessa Matta Blog has taught me.

1.  Niente accade senza un impegno serio.

Nothing happens unless you seriously commit to making it happen.

2. Per imparare una lingua straniera ci vuole tempo.

Mastering a foreign language requires time.

3. Parlare un’altra lingua può essere umiliante, ma gli errori dovrebbero essere accolti positivamente.

Speaking a foreign language can be humbling, but mistakes should be positively embraced.

4. Per imparare una lingua bisogna essere coraggiosi. Devi abbandonare la zona di sicurezza.

Becoming proficient in a new language requires boldness and stepping out of comfort zones.

5. Non hai bisogno di trasferirti all’estero per immergerti nella lingua.

You don’t have to move to a foreign country to immerse in its language.

6.  L’apprendimento di una lingua straniera può aprire la porta alle nuove opportunità e nuove amicizie.

Learning a foreign language can open doors to new opportunities and friendships.

7. L’apprendimento di una lingua straniera non finisce mai!

One never stops learning a foreign language!

8. Accogliere uno studente italiano per un anno può cambiare vita e regalarti una nuova famiglia.

Hosting an Italian high school student for a year can change your life and give you a new family.

9. Se fai amicizia con qualcuno della Basilicata, ci sono buone probabilità di “volare con gli angeli” tra i due monti di Castelmezzano.

If you make friends with someone from the Basilicata, there is a good chance you will “fly with the angels” and go zip-lining between two mountains in Castelmezzano. (Il volo dell’angelo).

10. Quando leggi un libro italiano con me, la possibilità di incontrare l’autrice e chiacchierare con lei è altissima.

When you read an Italian book with me, the probability of meeting the author and chatting with her is very high.

11. Quando vieni in Italia con uno dei miei programmi ti farai degli amici a vita, migliorerai il tuo italiano e avrai il tempo della tua vita!

When you come to Italy on one of my programs, you will make life-long friends, improve your Italian, and have the time of your life!

12. Il momento quando smetti di pensare in inglese e inizi a pensare e sognare in italiano è il momento più dolce di tutti.

The moment when you stop thinking in English and start thinking and dreaming in Italian is the sweetest moment of all.

You don’t have to live in Italy to learn the language. It is possible to create an Immersion program at home. I’m living proof! I went from “0 to fluent” using these tips as my roadmap to fluency.
