Quest’anno ho potuto andare a trovare la mia amica Mari che abita in Sicilia in Catania. Mari è una delle insegnante che fa Homestay. Durante il mio soggiorno nel Sud Italia ho avuto la possibilità di incontrarla di persona dopo mesi di corrispondenti, così come sua mamma e suo fratello (chi è un poliziotto). Abbiamo fatto tante gite in centro e nella campagna, anche sulla cima di Etna per scoprire più della bellezza della sua zona. Ho anche tuffato nel mare. Quel giorno, alla fine dell’estate, il tempo era ancora bello, e il mare era di una fantastica colore di blu, e la temperatura era perfetta per nuotare e per sdraiarsi sulla spiaggia al sole.
This year I was able to visit my friend Mari who lives in Sicily in Catania. Mari is one of my Homestay teachers. During my stay in Southern Italy, I had the chance to meet her in person after months of corresponding, as well as her mother as well as her brother (who is a policeman ). We made many trips to the city center and out into the countryside, even to the top of Etna to discover more of Sicily’s beauty. I also dove into the sea. That day, at the end of summer, the weather was still beautiful, and the sea was a fantastic shade of blue—and it was perfect temperature to swim and stretch out on the beach in the sun.
Però è una storia diversa a Capodanno. Però nonostante il freddo c’è un gruppo delle persone pazze che tuffarsi dentro il mare per festeggiare il nuovo anno. Mari voleva condividere questa storia con voi. Voleva anche che io vi ricordassi del suo Homestay—proprio nella città di Catania poca distanza dal centro, dove lei abita con la sua mamma sull’ultimo piano di un condominio con una vista mozzafiato di Etna e il mare.
But, it’s a different story on New Year’s Eve in Catania! Despite the cold, there is a crazy group of people who jump into the ocean to celebrate the New Year. Mari wanted to share this story with you. She also wanted me to remind you of her Homestay that is located in Catana just a short distance from the center, where she lives with her mom on the top floor of an apartment complex with a breath-taking view of Etna and the sea.

Alla viglia di Capodanno ovvero Il 31 dicembre si svolge ogni anno la manifestazione denominata “la San Silvestro a mare” in un porticciolo turistico della città dove un gruppo di circa 100 persone si sfidano nelle fredde acque del mare in una gara internazionale che ha luogo dal 1996. L’anno scorso ha anchepartecipato l’astronauta Siciliano, Luca Parmitano !
On New Year’s Eve, on December 31, there is even an event called “La San Silvestro a mare” that takes place every year in a tourist port of the city where a group of about 100 people competes in the cold waters of the sea in an international competition that has occurred since 1996. Last year, even the Sicilia astronaut, Luca Parmitano participated!

Invece nei paesi nei dintorni di Catania hanno luogo diverse manifestazioni rappresentanti la messa in scena della natività. Uno di questi è il presepe settecentesco di Acireale allestito in una grotta. Sotto trovate il link sul facebook che racconta di questa manifestazione artistica.
On the other hand, in the towns of Catania, there are other displaces that take place, such as the Nativity scenes that decorate the piazzas. One of these is the eighteenth-century Nativity scene of Acireale set up in a cave.
