Oggi è il natale di Roma. La festività laica è legata alla fondazione della città da parte di Romolo, secondo la leggenda, il 21 aprile del settecento cinquanta tre avanti Cristo. In occasione del compleanno di Roma, via dei Fori Imperiali sarà resa pedonale per tutto il giorno e sono previsti numerosi spettacoli ed eventi nella zona. Ci saranno una parata e anche uno spettacolo che illumina i cieli notturni sopra il foro per tutti i cittadini di Roma e per i turisti di tutto il mondo!  

Today is Rome’s Birthday. The secular holiday is linked to the founding of the city by Romulus, according to legend, on April 21, seven hundred and fifty-three BC. On the occasion of the birthday of Rome, Via dei Fori Imperiali will be closed and only available to pedestrians for the entire day and there are many shows and events in the area. There will be parades and even a fireworks display that will illuminate the night skies over the forum for all Roman citizens and for all the tourists from around the world!

Ma non si può avere un compleanno senza una torta vero? Ecco una che ho preparato…ok, sono cupcake e in realtà li ho comprati per quest’occasione! ma è il pensiero che conta, no? È stata Julie Avalena di “Nothing Bundt Cakes” che mi ha venduto questi meravigliosi cupcake. Julie era molto felice ad aiutarmi a scegliere i cupcake per questo video e mi ha raccontato che ha sempre voluto imparare l’italiano! 

But you can’t have a birthday without a cake right? Here’s one that I prepared…ok, these are actually cupcakes that I bought for the occasion! But it’s the thought the counts, right. It was Julie Avalena of “Nothing Bundt Cakes” who sold me these wonderful cupcakes. Julie was happy to help me choose the cupcakes for this video and told me that she has always wanted to learn Italian!

Boh! i primi romani avrebbero apprezzato una fetta di torta! Infatti i primi festeggiamenti, per un compleanno, di cui si abbia notizia, risalgono al TRE mila avanti Cristo e furono quelli degli antichi eigiziani. Le celebrazioni consistevano in banchetti regali a cui prendevano parte anche servitori e schiavi. Furono i Greci, adottando la tradizione egiziana di festeggiare il compleanno del “dio”, che aggiunsero la tradizione di preparare un dolce specifico. I Romani, considerandola un’ottima idea, hanno deciso di festeggiare i più importanti uomini di stato in questa maniera.

Well, The early Romans would have appreciated a piece of cake! Indeed the first celebrations for the birthday of which we have a record of, date back to three thousand BC, and those were ancient Egyptian. The celebrations consisted of royal banquets in which servants and slaves also participated. The Greeks adopted the Egyptian tradition by celebrating the birthday of their God, to which they added the tradition of preparing a specific sweet. The Romans, considering it a great idea, decided to also celebrate their important statesmen in this way.

Siete mai andati a Roma? Avete avuto delle “Vacanze Romane”? Ricordate quel bel film classico girato da William Wyler nel 1953 con Audrey Hepburn e Gregory Peck? Quanto mi piace quel film. Mi piace vederlo più e più volte. Adoro la scena in cui Gregory Peck mette la sua mano nella bocca della verità alla chiesa di Santa Maria in Cosmedin. 

Have you ever been to Rome? Have you had a Roman Holiday? Remember that beautiful classic film directed by William Wyler in 1953 with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck? How I love that film. I can watch it over and over again. I love the part when Gregory Peck put his hand in the mouth of truth in the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin.

Io non vedo l’ora di tornare a Roma quest’estate. È una delle mie città preferite! C’è così tanto da vedere il foro, la scalinata di Piazza di Spagna, Piazza del Popolo, villa Borghese e i suoi giardini, il Vatican, San Pietro e la piazza di Bernini, Piazza Navona, l’arte…ahhh l’arte! Ci sono tantissime chiese e ognuna di loro ha un quadro o una scultura interessante. 

I can’t wait to return to Rome this summer. It is one of my favorite cities! There is so much to see: the forum, the Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, Villa Borghese, and its gardens, the Vatican, St. Peter’s, and Bernini’s piazza, Piazza Navona, the art…ahh the art! There are so many churches and each of them has a  painting or a sculpture worth seeing. 

A proposito, ascoltate un po’! Se volete viaggiare con me a Roma c’e’ ancora posto!Sono molto emozionata di collaborare con Roberto Tartaglione, il direttore di Scud’It, nella zona di San Giovani in Laterano,  a pochi passi dal Colosseo… e anche con Kelly Medford, un’artista americana che abita a Roma. Venite con noi – ci diverteremo un mondo! Studieremo italiano, disegneremo con kelly, vedremo arte dappertutto con una guida, mangeremo bene…anzi, mangeremo benissimo! Berremo vino e ascolteremo la musica; faremo anche un picnic romano a Frascati…quasi come un festeggiamento di compleanno…e soprattutto, parleremo in Italiano! Potremo approfondire la nostra conoscenza della lingua e faremo amicizia con altri romani! Unitevi a noi!
