Bruce è un mio amico che vive a San Francisco dove vivevo io. Dal momento in cui ho visto i suoi dipinti sono diventata una tifosa, diciamo. Mi piace molto la sua visione artistica e del suo stile di pittura. Penso che l’arte possa parlarti se tu rallenti un po’ e guardarla bene… e i quadri di Bruce a me parla volumi!
Bruce is a friend of mine who lives in San Francisco where I used to live. From the moment I saw his paintings I became a fan, let’s say. I really like his artistic vision and his painting style. I think that art can speak to you if you slow down a bit and look at it carefully … and Bruce’s paintings speak volumes to me!
Lui è un artista di California chi ama viaggiare in Italia, Cuba, Marocco e altri Paesi. Ma, a parte dei luoghi “esotici” che lui dipinge, la magia dello stile di Bruce è che può trasformare una semplice scena ordinaria, un paesaggio, una scena urbana, una figura o una natura morta in qualcosa di molto emozionante e bello. È in grado di catturare un momento fugace e conservarlo in modo che possiamo apprezzarlo appieno.
He is an artist from California who loves to travel to Italy, Cuba, Morocco, and other countries. But apart from the “exotic” places that he paints, the magic of Bruce’s style is that he can transform a simple ordinary scene, a landscape, an urban scene, a figure, or a still life into something very exciting and beautiful. He is able to capture a fleeting moment and preserve it so that we can fully appreciate it.

Questa scena, anche se è piuttosto piccola, per me rappresenta molte cose su più livelli — la storia dell’arte, l’esperienza museale, il mio amore personale per l’arte, ma soprattutto in questo dipinto Bruce cristallizza l’atto di fermarsi per vedere e apprezzare davvero un’opera d’arte.
This scene, even if it is quite small, for me represents many things on several different levels — the history of art, the museum experience, my own love for art — but above all in this painting Bruce crystallizes the act of stopping to truly see and appreciate a work of art.

Nei miei romanzi, scrivo molto sul processo artistico. Nel mio primo (Dreaming Sophia), parlo di artisti che si evolvono e imparano l’uno dall’altro. In questo modo l’arte è portata avanti in direzioni nuove e fresche. Nel mio secondo libro (Waking Isabella), parlo dell’idea che se uno guarda davvero intorno a sè, troverà la bellezza che prima si è sfuggita. Secondo me se tu osservi con attenzione, si troverà la bellezza anche in cose insignificanti come i graffiti, la luce che filtra attraverso foglie o libri colorati impilati su una scrivania.
In my novels, I write a lot about the artistic process. In my first one (Dreaming Sophia), I talk about artists who evolve and learn from each other. In this way, art is carried forward in new and fresh directions. In my second book (Waking Isabella), I talk about the idea that if one really looks around, he will find the beauty he previously missed. In my opinion, if you look carefully, you will find beauty even in insignificant things like graffiti, the light that filters through leaves, or a stack of colorful books on a desk.
Un artista può prendere queste osservazione e può rendere l’ordinario a straordinario.
An artist can take these observations
and make the ordinary — extraordinary.
Bruce è un brillante esempio di questo ed è il motivo per cui sono attratta dal suo lavoro. Non importa quale sia il suo soggetto, che si tratta di un panino al burro di arachidi, persone che camminano in una strada trafficata o una sedia solitaria… trasforma l’oggetto o la scena più ordinaria in un “eroe” completo e li rende straordinariamente usando angoli emozionanti, ombre drammatiche, e colore lussureggiante.
Bruce is a great example of this and that is why I am drawn to his work. No matter what its subject is, whether it is a peanut butter sandwich, people walking on a busy street, or a lonely chair … it transforms the most ordinary object or scene into a complete “hero” and them renders it extraordinarily using exciting angles, dramatic shadows, and lush color.
È l’atto di isolare un momento semplice e immortalarlo, e farlo cantare con un nuovo significato che trovo particolarmente attraente nel lavoro di Bruce.
It’s the act of isolating a simple moment and immortalizing it and having it sing with new meaning that I find particularly appealing in Bruce’s work.
Bruce lavora in uno studio al cantiere navale Hunter’s Point di San Francisco e all’aperto. Espone le sue opere in varie gallerie della città. Insegna anche pittura in studio e plein air.
Bruce works in a studio at San Francisco’s Hunters Point shipyard and outdoors. He exhibits his works in various galleries around the city. He also teaches studio painting and Plein air painting.
