Nel post precedente (Part 1: Vorrei farvi conoscere la mia amica Elena) vi ho fatto conoscere la mia amica Elena e ho parlato dei suoi Homestay / Italian Language Vacation a Bergamo. Oggi avremo l’opportunità di conoscere meglio Bergamo perché stiamo per fare una passeggiata con Elena attraverso la sua città.
Elena Homestay in Bergamo
In a previous post (Part 1: Vorrei farvi conoscere la mia amica Elena) I introduced you to my friend Elena and I talked about her Homestay Language vacations in Bergamo. Today are getting the chance to learn more about Elena’s hometown of Bergamo because we are about to take a walk with Elena through her city.

“Bergamo, città mirabellissima!”
Così scriveva un viaggiatore veneziano del ‘400 che attraversò le terre lombarde e a distanza di secoli, questa stessa stessa immagine accoglie ancora oggi il turista.
“Bergamo, miraculously beautiful city!” So wrote a 15th-century Venetian traveler crossing through Lombardy. Years later this same beautiful town welcomes tourists just as it did during the 1500s.
Bergamo, stretta nella sua cerchia di mura, viene generalmente descritta come città ricca di arte e di storia, il che è assolutamente vero, ma non sufficiente se si vuole conoscere la città nel suo intimo, al di là di quanto offrono musei e monumenti. Mettiamo quindi da parte le guide turistiche, che potranno essere certamente consultate in un secondo momento e scopriamo, con una bella passeggiata, la vera Bergamo.
Bergamo, surrounded by ancient walls, is often considered as a city rich in art and history, which is absolutely true, but not enough if you wish to get to know the city intimately and not only in terms of what its museums and monuments have to offer. So, let’s put aside the guidebooks (you may read them later) and try to get to know Bergamo by taking a pleasant walk.
Dal momento che Bergamo è divisa in due parti (la città bassa e la città alta), solitamente preferisco iniziare la passeggiata partendo da casa mia che si trova sui colli, così da poter ammirare “entrambe le città” ed i bellissimi panorami.
Since Bergamo is divided into two (the town on the plain and the town on the hill), I generally prefer to start the walk from home, which is in the “upper part” so that to admire “both” of them and the wonderful panoramas.
Ci sono numerose strade acciotolate e scalette che conducono nel cuore del borgo medievale. Una volta raggiunto il colle di S. Vigilio dove si trova il Castello, il panorama è davvero mozzafiato. Nelle giornate terse, si possono persino vedere in lontananza i grattacieli di Milano e il Monte Rosa.
There are numerous cobblestone lanes and steps that lead to the heart of the medieval town and once arrived in S. Vigilio, where the old Castle is, the panoramic view is extraordinary. On a clear day, you can even see in the distance the skyscrapers of Milan and Monte Rosa.
La passeggiata prosegue, fiancheggiando splendide ville liberty e bei giardini fino al complesso della Cittadella, un tempo fortificato e che oggi ospita il Museo Civico di Scienze Naturali e il Museo Archeologico.
The walk continues, skirting the beautiful Art Nouveau villas and the beautiful gardens of the Citadel, once fortified and which now house the Museum of Natural Sciences and the Archaeological Museum.
Attraversata la porta della Cittadella, ammiriamo la Torre della Campanella e ci immettiamo così nel cuore pulsante della citta antica. Seguendo la direttrice principale – Via Colleoni – detta anche la “Corsarola” ammiriamo il susseguirsi di piccoli negozi, panetterie, pasticcerie con le specialità locali che fanno venire davvero l’acquolina in bocca.
Having crossed the gate of the Citadel, we can admire the Torre della Campanella which is located in the heart of the ancient city. Following the main road – Via Colleoni – also called the “Corsarola” we can admire the many small shops, bakeries, pastry shops with feature local specialties that make your mouth water…
Oltrepassato il Teatro Sociale ora chiudete gli occhi e immaginatevi di fare un salto all’indietro nel tempo: ed ecco la magia di Piazza Vecchia, uno spazio straordinario, non a torto considerata una delle più belle piazze d’Italia.
Once we have passed by the Teatro Social, now close your eyes and imagine that you have stepped back in time: open your eyes and behold the magic of the Piazza Vecchia (Old Square) an extraordinary space, rightly considered one of the most beautiful squares in Italy.
Lo sguardo nella quattrocentesca Piazza Vecchia si posa subito sulla bella fontana Contarini al centro per poi spostarsi su diversi magnifici palazzi: a destra spicca il Palazzo del Podestà che conduce verso il Palazzo della Ragione che, con il maestoso leone veneto sulla facciata, la chiude sul fondo. Svetta in un angolo la torre del Comune, detta anche Campanone che alle 10 di ogni sera batteva 100 rintocchi per indicare la chiusura delle porte d’ingresso alla città: anche se il coprifuoco non c’è più, la grossa campana ancora oggi suona tutte le sere.
Peeking into the 15th century Piazza Vecchia you see right away the beautifulContarini fountain in the middle and then you take in magnificent palaces: To the right stands the Palazzo del Podesta and then there is the Palazzo della Ragione, with its majestic Venetian lion facade, that is closed in the back. In the corner is the Tower of the City that every night at 10 pm rings 100 times to indicate the closure of the city gates: even if they’re no longer is a curfew the bell still rings.
Si distingue invece per l’imponente facciata di marmo, la Biblioteca civica. Poco conosciuta, benché bella e preziosa è la Meridiana sotto il Palazzo della Ragione: davvero unica.
Then there is the imposing marble facade of the City library to behold. Also, you can see the lesser-known, but still beautiful and unique Palazzo della Ragione.
Al di là del portico sotto il palazzo della Ragione, si intravede un altro spazio: la piazza del Duomo. Su questo spazio raccolto si affacciano la Cattedrale dedicata al patrono Sant’Alessandro, la Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore e la famosa Cappella Colleoni, capolavoro del Rinascimento lombardo e il trecentesco Battistero.
Beyond the portico under the Palazzo della Ragione, you can make out another space: the Piazza del Duomo. In this part of the square, you will find the Cathedral dedicated to Saint Alexander, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and the famous Colleoni Chapel, a masterpiece of the Lombard Renaissance as well as the 14thc Baptistry.
Direi che la nostra passeggiata, può concludersi con una visita al vecchio lavatoio, posto in una stradina laterale e poco conosciuto. In estate, un piccolo ristorante all’aperto offre prelibate specialità bergamasche. Una buona sosta dopo tanto girovagare.
I would say that our walk may end with a visit to the old laundry house, a place located on a little-known side street. In the summer there is an outdoor restaurant that offers specialties only known to Bergamo. It is a great place to stop after wandering through the town of Bergamo!
