Standing nude in front of Venus! Spogliarsi davanti la Venere

Ora, dopo un lungo inverno freddo, è bello vedere i primi segni della primavera. Ci sono gli uccelli che fanno i nidi e che cinguettano, ci sono i fiori che spuntano e ci sono i primi raggi di sole che riscaldano la terra. Tutti questi segni mi fanno venir voglia di prendere i miei occhiali da sole e di indossare una maglietta senza maniche.

Now, after a long cold winter, it is great to see those first signs of spring. There are the birds who are making nests and chirping, the flowers are springing up and the first warm rays of sunshine are warming up the earth. All these signs make me want to grab my sunglasses and put on a tank top! 

Ma a quanto pare qualcun altro, questi segni della primavera fanno venire voglia di stare di fronte ai quadri di Botticelli nella Galleria degli Uffizi di Firenze e…spogliarsi nudo! Non vi prendo in giro!! Recentemente, un 25 enne turista spagnolo si è spogliato davanti a “la Nascita di Venere”. Nervoso e stordito, il giovane si è tolto la giacca, poi la camicia finché è rimasto completamente nudo di fronte alla famosa opera d’arte e ha borbottato “Questa è poesia, questa è poesia” e poi ha gettato petali di rose rosa in aria. Gli “ooh” e “ahh” degli altri visitatori sorpresi nelle stanze di Botticelli si sono diffusi rapidamente alle guardie vicine, che hanno fermato il giovane, coprendolo con un panno prima che potesse essere arrestato per atti osceni dalla polizia.

But apparently, for some others, these signs of spring make them want to stand in front of Botticelli paintings in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence…and strip naked! I kid you not folks. Recently, a 25-year-old Spanish tourist bared all before “Botticelli’s Birth of Venus”. Nervous and dazed, the young man removed his jacket, then his shirt until he was fully naked in front of the famous work of art and mumbled in Italian: ‘This is poetry, this is poetry,’ and then threw pink rose petals into the air. The “oohing” and “ahhing” of the other surprised visitors in the Botticelli rooms quickly spread to nearby guards, who stopped the young man, covering him with a cloth, so he wouldn’t be arrested for indecent exposure by the police.

Anch’io sono rimasta con molto piacere di fronte all’opera dell’arte di Botticelli, ma non riesco a ricordare di avere avuto la stessa voglia di strapparmi tutti i miei vestiti per guardare l’arte totalmente nuda! Nella stessa galleria degli Uffizi c’è un’altra famosa opera di Botticelli, “la Primavera”. Il dipinto fu commissionato dalla famiglia Medici nel 1482 e raffigura un gruppo di figure mitologiche in un giardino che festeggia l’arrivo della primavera. Nel giardino che rappresenta la rinascita della natura c’è Zephrus, il dio del vento rigido di marzo. Si dice che lui avesse rapito la ninfa Clori, che in seguito sposò e trasformò nella dea della primavera, la portatrice eterna della vita. Potete vederla spargere le rose per terra. (Proprio come il nostro spagnolo!)

I too have stood enraptured in front of Botticelli’s works of art, but I can’t quite recall having the same urge to rip off all my clothes and drink in the beauty of the paintings in just my birthday suit! In the same gallery of the Uffizi is another famous work by Botticelli “La primavera”. The painting was commissioned by the Medici family in 1482 and depicts a group of mythological figures in a garden celebrating the arrival of spring. In the garden which represents the rebirth of nature is Zephyrus, the god of the biting wind of March. He is said to have kidnapped the nymph Chloris, whom he later marries and transforms her into the goddess of Spring, the eternal bearer of life. You can see her scattering roses on the ground. (Just like our Spaniard!)

Originariamente il quadro non aveva un titolo. È stato Giorgio Vasari, pittore e scrittore, che ha dato questo quadro il nome “La Primavera”, quando l’ha visto a Villa Castello a Firenze. Vasari è anche accreditato come “il primo storico dell’arte” perché lui è stato il primo a scrivere la storia degli artisti, come Michelangelo e Botticelli. Vasari scrive che Botticelli ha creato questo quadro con vernice chiamata “tempera grassa” che era un nuovo mezzo in Italia in quel periodo. “Tempera  grassa” è una vernice in cui il tuorlo d’uovo è modificato con l’aggiunta d’olio per rendere la vernice più trasparente. Penso che sia piuttosto opportuno che Botticelli abbia usato questo tipo di vernice per creare il suo “La primavera” visto che l’uovo è un simbolo piuttosto importante per della vita e della rinascita!

Originally the painting didn’t have a title. It was Giorgio Vasari, a painter, and writer who gave this painting the name “La Primavera” when he viewed it at Villa Castello in Florence. Vasari is also credited as being “the first art historian” as he was the first person to catalog the lives of artists, like Michelangelo and Botticelli. Vasari writes that Botticelli created this piece using paints called “tempera grassa” which was a new medium in Italy at the time. Tempera grassa are painted in which the egg yolk was modified by the addition of oil to make the paint more transparent. I think that is rather appropriate that Botticelli used this kind of paint to create his “la primavera” seeing as the egg is a rather important symbol of life and rebirth! 

L’arte di Botticelli continua ad’essere apprezzata primavera dopo primavera, perché la sua arte è come una boccata d’aria fresca. È sicuramente qualcosa da festeggiare. Così che la prossima volta che vi trovate a Firenze andate a visitare gli Uffizi per vedere “la Primavera” e “la Nascita di Venere”…ma mi raccomando! Mantenete la calma e rimanete vestita! Il dipinto è una celebrazione della rinascita, ma non abbiamo proprio bisogno di vedervi come come mamma vi ha fatto!!

Botticelli’s art continues to be appreciated spring after spring because his art is like a breath of fresh air. So the next time you are in Florence make a point of visiting the Uffizi galleries to view “La Primavera” and “The Birth of Venus”…put please…keep calm and stay dressed! The painting is a celebration of rebirth, but we really don’t need to see how you entered the world!
