Organizzo anche Homestay Language vacanze e programmi per gruppi di studenti con insegnanti e scuole italiane per studiare l’italiano nel bel paese!

To facilitate home studies I post articles, tips, grammar lessons, and vocabulary with images on my site and social media on Instagram and Facebook. I also organize Homestay Language holidays and programs for groups of students with Italian teachers and schools to study Italian in Italy!

Perché faccio tutte queste cose? Beh, la risposta è semplice. Perché sono matta per l’Italia!

Why do I do all these things? Well, the answer is simple. Because I’m crazy about Italy!

Ogni giorno scopro cose nuove sull’Italia e sulla lingua, ed è il mio piacere condividere le scoperte e le notizie sull’Italia con persone che sono appassionate come me della lingua e della cultura italiana.

Every day I discover new things about Italy and the language, and it is my pleasure to share my discoveries and news about Italy with people who are as passionate about the Italian language and culture as I am.

Mi sembra che l’Italia e l’italiano siano doni che non finiscono mai; quando si è sicuri delle proprie competenze linguistiche, si è più inclini a chiacchierare e fare nuove amicizie, e di conseguenza i viaggi in Italia diventano più interessanti e gratificanti e ci si sente più a proprio agio a girare per il Paese.

It seems to me that Italy and Italian are gifts that keep giving; when you are confident about your language skills, you are more inclined to chat and make new friends, and as a result, trips to Italy become more interesting and rewarding and you feel more comfortable traveling around the country.

Prendete, per esempio, lo scorso autunno quando ero in Italia. Dopo aver terminato il mio programma linguistico a Lucca, in Toscana, sono stata invitata di andare ad incontrare la direttrice di una scuola italiana in una città sconosciuta a me — Ascoli Piceno. Non ci ho pensato due volte a partire per questa nuova avventura e fare nuove conoscenze! In Italia, cerco sempre una nuova svolta nella strada e sono pronta per fare nuove amicizie!

Take, for example, last fall when I was in Italy. After finishing my language program in Lucca, Tuscany, I was invited to meet the director of an Italian school in a city unknown to me – Ascoli Piceno. I did not think twice about taking off on this new adventure and making new acquaintances! In Italy, I’m always looking for a new turn in the road and I’m ready to make new friends!

Have you ever heard of Ascoli Piceno?

Di solito, quando la cito le persone che non sono italiane o hanno uno sguardo vuoto e scuotano la testa, o i loro volti si illuminano ed esclamano animatamente che Ascoli è un tesoro nascosto, la loro città preferita in tutta l’Italia, e non vedono l’ora di tornarci.

Usually, when I mention it to people who are not Italian either they have an empty look and shake their heads, or their faces light up and exclaim animatedly that Ascoli is a hidden treasure, their favorite city in all of Italy, and can not wait to go back.

Sono molto curiosa di sapere qual è la vostra reazione. Siete mai stati ad Ascoli Piceno?

Ascoli Piceno! L’anno scorso, dopo essere stata contatta da Antonella Valentini la direttrice dell’Academia Linguistica di Ascoli Piceno, e dopo che mi ha intrattenuto con racconti e descrizioni della città, il mio interesse è stato stuzzicato e ho desiderato vederla con i miei occhi.

Ascoli Piceno! Last year, after being contacted by Antonella Valentini, the director of the Academia Linguistica of Ascoli Piceno, and after having entertained me with stories and descriptions of the city, my interest was piqued and I wanted to see it with my own eyes.

Così, ho deciso di accettare l’offerta di visitare la città per incontrare Antonella e il suo staff di docenti specializzati nell’insegnamento agli stranieri.

So, I decided to accept the offer to visit the city to meet Antonella and her staff of teachers who specialize in teaching foreigners.

Alcuni anni fa, avevo viaggiato nella regione delle Marche e nella città natale di Raffaello (Urbino) e sono rimasta molto impressionata dalle vaste colline verdi e dal panorama mozzafiato.

A few years ago, I traveled in Le Marche region to the hometown of Raffaello (Urbino) and I was very impressed by the vast green hills and the breathtaking view.

Le Marche sono un paese bellissimo, ma meno noto a molti turisti siccome è situato sull’altro lato delle montagne che lo separano dalla Toscana e dall’Umbria e quindi un po’ difficile da raggiungere.

Le Marche is a beautiful country, but less known to many tourists as it is located on the other side of the mountains that separate it from Tuscany and Umbria and therefore a bit difficult to reach.

Ma una volta che si arriva nelle Marche ci si rende conto che gode di una posizione favorevole trovandosi tra le colline a ovest e il mare Adriatico a est.

But once you arrive in le Marche you realize that it enjoys a favorable position set between the hills to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east.

È un paese lussureggiante che abbaglia gli occhi con la sua bellezza e offre il meglio di entrambi i mondi, escursioni e sci in inverno e nuoto e sole su spiagge di sabbia bianca incontaminate in estate.

It is a lush country that dazzles the eyes with its beauty and offers the best of both worlds, hiking and skiing in winter and swimming and sun on pristine white sandy beaches in summer.

La città di Ascoli Piceno si trova più sud di Urbino, ed è antica in tutti i sensi della parola!

The city of Ascoli Piceno is located further south than Urbino, and is ancient in every sense of the word!

I suoi antenati precedettero i Romani, e la città fu fondata un secolo prima che la città di Roma fosse nata. La tribù che governava la terra era chiamata i Piceni. Dominavano il territorio che si estendeva da Pesaro a nord fino a Chieti, in Abruzzo.

Its ancestors preceded the Romans, and the city was founded a century before the city of Rome was born. The tribe that ruled the land was called the Piceni. They dominated the territory that extended from Pesaro in the north to Chieti, in Abruzzo.

La prima volta che sono entrata nella piazza principale — Piazza del Popolo sono rimasta a bocca aperta. Con il sole che luccicava sulla piazza pavimentata in lastre bianche, sembrava una pista di pattinaggio.

The first time I entered the main square – Piazza del Popolo my jaw dropped open. With the sun shining on the square paved with white slabs, it looked like a skating rink.

Infatti, l’intera città sembrava di illuminarsi. Ho scoperto più tardi che la città è costruita con blocchi di travertino bianco, estratto dalle montagne intorno ad Ascoli. A causa di questo la città sembra di brillare giorno e notte riflettendo la luce del sole della luna.

In fact, the whole city seemed to light up. I later discovered that the city is built with blocks of white travertine, extracted from the mountains around Ascoli. Because of this the city seems to shine day and night reflecting the moonlight.

Sono stati i Romani che hanno scoperto le cave di travertino al largo della Via Salaria e che hanno usato la pietra per costruire la città sopra le rovine dei Piceni. E adesso, possiamo ancora vedere le rovine romane; la lavanderia romana, il teatro, i templi, le colonne, e anche un ponte romano — il ponte Solestà costruito da imperatore Augusto, duemila anni fa, che attraversa il fiume Tronto — è ancora oggi una delle principali vie in città utilizzata da automobili.

It was the Romans who discovered the travertine quarries off the Via Salaria and who used the stone to build the city above the ruins of the Piceni. And now, we can still see the Roman ruins; the Roman laundry, the theater, the temples, the columns, and even a Roman bridge – the Solestà bridge built by Emperor Augustus, two thousand years ago, that crosses the Tronto River — is still one of the main streets in the city used by cars.

Sembra che gli architetti romani siano migliori di alcuni architetti moderni!

It seems that the Roman architects are better than some modern architects!

Anche se la città è costruita da marmo bianco che assomiglia neve e ghiaccio durante il mio primo sguardo della Piazza del Popolo mentre guardavo intorno al Duomo in fondo e tutti i piccoli bar e negozi che costeggiavano il perimetro della piazza, mi accorgevo del calore accogliente della città e mi sentivo a casa.

Although the city is built from white marble that resembles snow and ice during my first look at the Piazza del Popolo as I looked around the Duomo at the far end and all the small bars and shops that line the perimeter of the square, I became aware of the cozy warmth of the city and I felt at home.

Ho preso posto in uno dei tanti caffè all’aperto e ho ordinato uno spritz e la specialità per cui la città è ben conosciuta — Olive Ascolane — olive grandi e succose ripiene di carne e fritte. Non sono rimasta delusa dall’ospitalità e dal cibo di Ascoli.

I took a seat in one of the many outdoor cafes and ordered a spritz and the specialty for which the city is well known – Olive Ascolane – large and juicy olives stuffed with meat and fried. I was not disappointed by the hospitality and food of Ascoli.

A differenza di alcune città collinari toscane che sono costruite su ripide colline, Ascoli è relativamente pianeggiante e facilmente percorribile a piedi. Inoltre, due fiumi scorrono intorno ad Ascoli, formando profonde gole su entrambi i lati della città, creando un paesaggio aspro.

Unlike some Tuscan hilltop towns that are built on steep hills, Ascoli is relatively flat and easily walkable on foot. In addition, two rivers flow around Ascoli, forming deep gorges on both sides of the city, creating a rugged landscape.

Seguendo i sentieri è possibile scendere fino alle rive del fiume per fare un tuffo nelle acque fresche, e per godere della serenità della natura, nonostante la vivace città in alto.

Following walking paths, you can go down to the banks of the river to take a dip in the cool waters, and enjoy the serenity of nature, despite the bustling city above you.

Durante il mio soggiorno, ho fatto un’escursione nella natura con Giorgio, uno degli insegnanti della scuola, fino al fiume. Passando dalla vecchia cartiera romana, sono stata trasportata in un ambiente tranquillo dominato dagli uccelli, dalle piante, degli alberi e delle piccole cascate che correvano sopra tronchi caduti.

During my stay, I went on a nature excursion with Giorgio, one of the school’s teachers, to the river. Passing by the old Roman paper mill, I was transported to a quiet environment dominated by birds, plants, trees, and small waterfalls that ran over fallen trunks.

Natura e arte si uniscono per dare ad Ascoli il suo fascino unico. La città ha molti musei e gallerie d’arte, tra cui la pinacoteca Civica, che ha opere di Tiziano e Guido Reni. Oltre agli edifici romani, la città ha anche molti palazzi e chiese medievali e rinascimentali. Ha il meglio dell’antico e del moderno, con ottimi ristoranti, locali notturni, bar, caffè, negozi, un’università e una rievocazione storica medievale, la Giostra della Quintana.

Nature and art come together to give Ascoli its unique charm. The city has many museums and art galleries, including the Pinacoteca Civica, which has works by Titian and Guido Reni. In addition to the Roman buildings, the city also has many medieval and Renaissance palaces and churches. It has the best of ancient and modern, with excellent restaurants, nightclubs, bars, cafes, shops, a university, and a medieval historical re-enactment, the Giostra della Quintana.

Ero particolarmente interessata a una visita guidata al museo della giostra per vedere le lance e i costumi e per conoscere la storia e le tradizioni cavalleresca della Quintana.

I was particularly interested in a guided tour of the carousel museum to see the spears and costumes and to learn about the history and chivalric traditions of the Quintana.

Durante il mio soggiorno grazie ad Antonella e agli insegnanti dell’Accademia mi sono immersa nella vita ascolana. Ho anche avuto modo di osservare una classe d’italiano e sono stata impressionata dalla scuola e dal personale. Tutti sono accoglienti e premurosi e fanno di tutto per far sentire i loro studenti a casa.

During my stay thanks to Antonella and the teachers of the Academy I immersed myself in the life of Ascoli. I also got to observe an Italian class and was impressed by the school and staff. All are welcoming and caring and do everything to make their students feel at home.

Sono stata così colpita da Ascoli e dalla scuola che ho deciso di collaborare con loro ad un nuovo programma di lingua italiana per piccoli gruppi.

I was so impressed by Ascoli and the school that I decided to collaborate with them on a new Italian language program for small groups.

Studieremo all’Accademia al mattino. Nei pomeriggi faremo gite in città e corsi di cucina, visiteremo artigiani locali, assaggeremo vino e andremo anche a San Benedetto del Tronto una città sul mare per cenare a base di pesce, fare shopping e nuotare nelle acque blu dell’Adriatico.

We’ll study at the Academy in the morning. In the afternoons we will do city tours and cooking classes, visit local artisans, taste wine, and also go to San Benedetto del Tronto a seaside town to dine on fish, go shopping and swim in the blue waters of the Adriatic.

Abbiamo organizzato anche una cena rinascimentale speciale per il nostro gruppo, completa di musica, sbandieratori, damigelle e cavalieri.

We have also organized a special Renaissance dinner for our group, complete with music, flag bearers, damsels, and knights.

Sembra molto interessante, no?

Ci sono diversi modi per raggiungere Ascoli; uno è con un autobus diretto che parte dall’aeroporto di Roma. L’altro è quello di incontrarmi ad Arezzo e unirvi ad un trasporto privato dalla Toscana alle Marche che sto organizzando.

There are several ways to reach Ascoli; one is by a direct bus that leaves from Rome airport. The other is to meet me in Arezzo and join a private transport from Tuscany to the Marche that I am organizing.
