Arzigogolato: Italian word means Elaborate, Complicated, Byzantine, Bizarre!

Mi è sempre piaciuta la parola “arzigogolato”. Per prima cosa, penso che sia una parola fantastica da pronunciare. Per articolare “arzigogolato” bisogna usare tutti i muscoli della bocca, così come la lingua! Secondo me, i suoni rotolano intorno alla bocca in un modo molto piacevole

I have always liked the word “arzigogolato”. First, I think it’s a fantastic word to pronounce. When you say “arzigogolato” you have to use all the muscles in your mouth as well as your tongue. I think the sounds roll around the mouth in a very pleasant way.

Anche il significato della parola è fantastico e sempre mi fa pensare all’arte Barocca! Significa una cosa tortuosa, serpeggiante, elaborata, complicata, bizantina, cervellotica!

The meaning of the word is also fantastic and always makes me think of Baroque Art. The word means tortuous, winding, elaborate, complicated byzantine, bizarre!

Anche tutte queste parole sono molto interessanti e vale la pena conoscerle e impararle.

tortuoso = curvy, contorted

contorto = convoluted

serpeggiante = winding

elaborato = elaborate

complicato = complicated

bizantino = elaborate, intricate

cervellotico  = bizarre, odd

Rimane ancora incerta l’origine del termine “barocco”, che deriva probabilmente dallo stesso termine della logica scolastica barocca; divenuta sinonimo di ragionamento pedante, bizzarro, arzigogolato. Poiché le opere barocche sono in generale caratterizzate da una teatrale esuberanza, che attira l’osservatore e lo coinvolge in un’esperienza visiva emotivamente carica.

It remains uncertain the origin of the word “baroque”, which probably derives from the same end of the scholastic logic, Baroque, which had become synonymous with pedantic reasoning, bizarre, convoluted. Since Baroque works of art are generally characterized by a theatrical exuberance that draws the observer in and involves him  in an emotionally charged visual experience.

For example, look at the impressive ceiling frescoes of Andrea Pozzo in Sant’ignazio Church in Rome. The church was dedicated to the founder of the Jesuit order, Saint Ignatius were important players in the Counter-Reformation movement.

Pozzo ha creato l’illusione che il Cielo, dipinto nella navata della chiesa, si stia aprendo sopra lo spettatore, che al momento in cui fu dipinto, sarebbe stato un credente. Per realizzare questa enorme impresa, Pozzo ha approfittato della architettura della chiesa, dipingendo una sua estensione nel soffitto. Come Cielo e Terra fondano, Cristo riceve Sant’Ignazio. Figure dai quattro angoli del mondo, sparse in tutta la pittura, guardano questo evento. Nella navata della chiesa, un disco segna il punto in cui lo spettatore dovrebbe stare per godersi l’intera illusione.

Pozzo created the illusion that Heaven is opening up above the viewer in the nave of the church, who, at the time of this painting, would have been a worshipper. To accomplish this huge feat, Pozzo took advantage of the church’s architecture, painting an extension of it in the ceiling. As Heaven and Earth blend, Christ receives Saint Ignatius. Figures from the four corners of the world, scattered throughout the painting, watch this event. In the nave of the church, a disk marks the spot where the viewer should stand in order to experience the entire illusion.

Non vedo l’ora di trovarmi in piedi in quel punto preciso, il prossimo mese quando sarò a Roma. La mia intenzione è guardare in su, questa magnifica opera d’arte, e vivere in prima persona il vero significato della parola “arzigogolato”.

I’m looking forward to finding that exact spot next month when I’m in Rome. I intend to gaze up into this magnificent work of art and become one with the Baroque and experience first hand the word “Arzigogolato!”
