Sono appena tornata da un mese trascorso in Italia. Le prime due settimane sono stata ad Arezzo con il mio gruppo di studenti di lingua, per il programma che io co-dirigo con Paola Testi, di Cultura Italiana. Ci siamo divertiti molto, vivendo come le persone del luogo e godendo vari aspetti della città: dell’arte e della storia… il tutto mentre miglioravamo le nostre abilità linguistiche. Ma una delle cose più belle e importanti per me, senza dubbio, è stata vedere la Giostra – un evento favoloso che succede due volte all’anno ad Arezzo, precisamente a giugno e a settembre.

I’ve just returned from a month spent in Italy. The first two weeks I was in Arezzo with my group of language students on a program that I co-lead with Paola Testi of Cultura Italiana. We had a marvelous time living like locals, enjoying so many aspects of the city, the art, the history…a little bit of everything while improving our language skills. But, the highlight for me, without a doubt, was seeing the Joust – a fabulous event that occurs twice a year in Arezzo in June & September.

Negli ultimi anni, ho sviluppato un affetto forte per la città di Arezzo e anche un acuto interesse per la giostra. Chissà perché…forse ho vissuto ad Arezzo in una vita precedente e la città mi sta richiamando. Un’idea romantica lo so, ma sono fatta così. Sembra giusto che la squadra della sono tifosa abbia lo slogan “con antico ardore.” Infatti qualcosa di profondo dentro di me risponde al suono dei tamburi, delle sfilate, delle corti, dei costumi medievali e dei cavalieri che corrono velocemente attraverso la piazza con le loro lance, pronti per colpire il bersaglio – il Saracino, che rappresenta il Re delle Indie.

Over the last couple of years, I have developed quite an affection for the town of Arezzo, as well as a keen interest in the joust. Who knows why…perhaps I lived in Arezzo in a previous life and the city is calling me back. A romantic notion to be sure, but that’s just how I am. It does seem appropriate that the team I root for has the slogan “con antico ardore” / with ancient ardor. Indeed, something deep inside of me responds to the sound of the drums, the parades, the pageantry, the medieval costumes and the cavaliers charging across the piazza with lances at the ready, taking aim at the Saracen target, representing the King of the Indies.

Ci sono quattro quartieri che partecipano alla gara, ma visto che Cultura Italiana (la scuola) si trova nella zona di Santo Spirito, naturalmente siamo tifosi della squadra blu e gialla. Come l’anno scorso, il mio gruppo ed io abbiamo guardato la giostra dallo stadio costruito temporaneamente in Piazza Grande in Tribunale A. Lo spettacolo è ben documentato dai fotografi e dalle troupe televisive di ArezzoTV e Teletruria TV, come qualsiasi evento sportivo su ESPN negli Stati Uniti. È un grande evento, credimi!

There are four neighborhoods that participate in the competition, but since Cultura Italiana (the school) is located in the Santo Spirito neighborhood, of course, we side with the Blue and Giallo team. As we did last year my group and I watched the joust from the stadium seats constructed in Piazza Grande in Tribunale A. The proceedings are well documented by photographers and television crews from Arezzo TV and Teletruria TV, as much as any sporting event featured on ESPN in the States. It is a big deal, to be sure.

Quest’anno il giorno dopo la giostra, ero sorpresa di sapere che il mio amico Luca che abita ad Arezzo, mi aveva visto nella folla mentre guardava l’evento dal suo comodo divano, a casa. Tornata nel mio ufficio un mese dopo, ero curiosa di vedere se potessi trovare la trasmissione e forse la mia breve apparizione su Arezzo TV. Dopo una ricerca veloce veloce su internet, successo! L’ho trovata!

The day after this year’s joust I was surprised to learn that my friend Luca who lives in Arezzo, had seen me in the crowded stands as he watched the event from the comfort of his living room couch. Back in my office a month later, I was curious to see if I could find the broadcast of and perhaps even my brief appearance on Arezzo TV. After some quick digging around the internet, I found it!

Se andate al punto 1:06 potete vedere Elia Cicerchia, il primo giostratore di Porta Santo Spirito che fa la prima corsa sulla lizza. Al punto 1:06:28 (non battere gli occhi) potete vedermi nel mio vestito blue; indosso anche un foulard blu e giallo, in onore dei colori della mia squadra. Al punto 1:28 potete anche vedere il secondo cavaliere per Santo Spirito, Gianmaria Scortecci e la sua corsa attraverso la piazza.

If you go to the mark 1:06 you can see Elia Cicerchia the first jouster for Porta Santo Spirito takes his first run up the track. At 1:06:28 (don’t blink) you will see me dressed in blue and wearing my scarf supporting the Blue & Yellow Team. At 1:28 mark you can also see the second rider for Santo Spirito, Gianmaria Scortecci takes his run up the track.

Questo settembre la giostra è stata vinta da Porta Sant’Andrea con due perfetti 5. Entrambi giocatori di Porta Santo Spirito hanno segnato 4 punti, rompendo una striscia vincente di quattro partite. La partita è stata breve, ma avvincente. Filippo Fardelli di Porta Crucifera ha perso la sua lancia, penalizzando la sua squadra, perdendo punti. L’unico modo per Porta Santo Spirito di vincere questa gara sarebbe stato se Gianmaria Scortecci fosse stato in grado di spezzare la lancia mentre colpiva il bersaglio tenuto dal Saraceno, dopidiché avrebbe raddoppiato i punti. Quello sarebbe stato incredibile, ma purtroppo non è accaduto.

This September, the Giostra was won by Sant’Andrea with two perfect 5s. Both the riders for Porta Santo Spirito scored 4s, breaking a four-match winning streak. The game was short and sweet with some drama, Filippo Fardelli of the Porta Crucifera team dropped his lance, penalizing his team, losing points. The only way for Porta Santo Spirito to win this match was if Scortecci had been able to break his lance as he hit the Saracen target, thus doubling points. That would have been something to see, but alas it didn’t happen.

Tutti hanno ben giocato! Complimenti a Porta Sant’Andrea per aver vinto la 135esima edizione della Giostra del Saracino. Sono in attesa di tornare ad Arezzo nel mese di giugno del 2018 per partecipare alla 136esima edizione della giostra notturna che sarà la terza settimana del mese e poi ancora il settembre prossimo con un nuovo gruppo degli studenti. Non vedo l’ora di tifare di nuovo per la mia squadra! Forza Giallo Blu!

Well done everyone! Congratulations to Porta Sant’Andrea for winning the 135th edition of the Giostra del Saracino. I am looking forward to returning to Arezzo in June to take part in the 136th evening joust the 3^rd week of the month and again next September with a new group of language learners. I can’t wait to to cheer on my team again!
