Il prossimo settembre io sarò co-leader di un gruppo di studenti in questa città medioevale con Paola Testi la direttrice di Cultura Italiana Scuola. Per dodici giorni frequenteremo lezioni di italiano vivendo in questo paese toscano e impareremo la sua storia e la sua cultura.
Next September 2016 I will be co-leading a group of Italian language students in this medieval town along with Paola Testi the director of Cultura Italiana. For 12 days we will live in this Tuscan town, where we will learn more about Arezzo’s history and culture, as well as take language lessons.

The 2016 Matta & Lucca Italian School Language Program
June 19 – 30, 2016
Prima vorrei presentarvi Paola Testi la direttrice della scuola. Insieme abbiamo creato un programma interessante che sarà caratterizzato da lezioni d’italiano al mattino e da lezioni di cucina oppure escursioni nei pressi di Cortona e Siena nel pomeriggio.
First I would like to introduce you all to Paola Testi the director of the school. Paola & I have created a great program featuring Italian lessons, excursions, cooking lessons, and day trips to nearby hill towns. Here is Paola who talks more about our program.
Grazie Paola! La scuola è fantastica e la città incantevole. Non vedo l’ora di tornarci. Ora mi piacerebbe mostrarvi alcune cose che ho scoperto della città durante un recente soggiorno.
Arezzo is such a lovely little town! The school is wonderful and the city is charming. I can’t wait to get back. Now I’d like to show you around Arezzo.
Dal primo momento in cui entrerete ad Arezzo sarete affascinati dalla sua arte e architettura. Ha un’atmosfera tranquilla che vi fa sentire come se aveste fatto un passo indietro nel tempo.
From the first moment you enter Arezzo, you will be charmed by her art and architecture. You will feel as though you have stepped back in time. The Piazza Grande is the most noteworthy medieval square in the city, opening behind the 13th-century Romanesque apse of Santa Maria della Pieve. It has a sloping pavement in red brick. Other landmarks of the square, include the Vasari Loggia along the north side.

Perhaps you might recall the setting of the main piazza from the movie “Life is Beautiful” with Roberto Benigni’s.
Ogni prima domenica di ogni mese la Piazza Grande è piena di antiquariato. I turisti e i visitatori al mercato può trovare un po’ di tutto…dai argenteria della nonna, candelabri e mobili da cucina a ceramica, antichi violini e vecchie macchina da scrivere.
Every first Sunday of every month the Piazza Grande is filled with antiques. Tourists and visitors to the market can find everything from grandma’s silverware, candlesticks, and kitchen cabinets to, china, violins, and old Olivetti typewriters.
La prima settimana di settembre la città celebra la Giostra del Saracino. L’anno prossimo durante il nostro soggiorno ad Arezzo ci saremmo per assistere a questa festa medioevale.
The first week of September the city celebrates Arezzo’s jousting festival. This tournament has its origins in the early 16 C and commemorates Christian efforts to hold back the tide of Islam. A lively and colorful procession is followed by the main event in which eight costumed knights charge towards a wooden representation of the Saracen, aiming to hit the Saracen’s shield with lances. Each pair of knights represents one of Arezzo’s four rival districts and the winner receives a golden lance.
La piazza è piena di sfarzo e gente in costume prima della gara, e dopo, le feste di massa sono impostati su lunghi tavoli all’aperto che può allungare per i blocchi sulle strade dei quartieri.
The square is filled with costumed pageantry before the race, and afterward massive feasts are set up on long outdoor tables that can stretch for blocks on the side streets.

During the festival, we also take part in this dinner that dates back to the Middle Ages.
La nostra casa durante il soggiorno sarà le antiche mura, un B&B gestita da una famiglia d’Arezzo.
Our home during our stay will be the Antiche Mura, a family-run B&B. My friend Barbara Lancini is warm and welcoming! She will make our stay very pleasant! The B&B is a 3-minute walk from the Duomo, and about a twenty-minute walk from the school. All rooms feature exposed beams and wooden floors, Wi-Fi, TVs, and air-conditioning. Breakfast is served in a nearby Caffe.
Durante la ristrutturazione dell’B&B, sono state trovate rovine etrusche.
During the renovation of the B&B, Etruscan ruins were found. To preserve them, a glass floor has been built in the entryway so that now visitors can see the ruins below.
Arezzo è molto bello…ci divertiremo esplorare la città, scoprendo l’arte di Arezzo…impareremo di più su di Vasari e Piero della Francesca….
Arezzo is beautiful…we will have fun exploring the city, discovering the art of Arezzo … we will learn more about Vasari and Piero della Francesca…
Studieremo a Cultura Italiana, converseremo, e miglioreremo la nostra conoscenza della lingua e le nostre abilità linguistiche…

Avremo lezioni di cucina con la divertente chef Lalla, nella sua casa nelle colline toscane fuori Arezzo…
We’ll have cooking lessons with the delightful chef Lalla, in her home in the Tuscan hills outside of Arezzo…
Esploreremo altre città vicine come Siena, Cortona and Anghiari…e durante tutto questo ci troveremo bene alla Scuola Cultura Italiana con gli insegnanti e con la gente all’antiche Mura…e ci innamoreremo di Arezzo e tutto quello che ci offriva!
We will explore neighboring hill towns, like Siena, Cortona, and Anghiari…and throughout all this, we will have a wonderful time at Cultura Italiana with the teachers and the folks at le’Antiche Mura …and we will learn to love Arezzo and all that she has to offer us!
