Highlights of the 2024 Matta & Lucca Italian Language School Program include participation in a cooking class with Eva and a wine-tasting excursion into the hills surrounding Lucca. We will discover all the town offers and visit neighboring attractions such as Lerici in Liguria. We will participate in an art project while conversing in Italian, visit local artisans, explore the churches, learn about Lucca’s legends, and walk or bike the walls of Lucca. Best of all, we will immerse in the Italian language through lively dinner conversations with teachers, friends, and your hostess and crazy language guide — Melissa! There will be unlimited Italian conversation practice, opportunities to meet and interact with like-minded Italian language students, and meet and make new Italian friends. So, come along with me and get to know all my friends in Lucca. It will be an experience you will never forget, and you will use and improve your Italian!

2024 Matta & Lucca Italian School
Italian Language Program Includes:
- 20 hours of Italian Lessons at Lucca Italian School in Lucca, Italy (9:00 am – 1:10 pm, with morning break)
- Unlimited Italian conversation practice with teachers & Italian friends
- 10 Days/ 9 nights in a private apartment with kitchen and laundry facilities in Lucca’s city center
- 6 Dinners, including welcome & farewell dinner celebrations
- 1 Cooking class in which we will prepare a 3-course meal including pasta, meat, sauces, vegetable dish, and dessert. We will dine on what we have prepared

All levels of language learners are welcome, from BEGINNER to ADVANCED. Students will be placed in appropriate classes according to their language levels along with other International students attending Cultura Italiana Arezzo.
— Morning classes at Cultura Italiana feature a mix of grammar instruction, group games & activities, conversation, and listening comprehension practice.
— Afternoon activities with Melissa are designed so that students may continue learning and practicing “fuori aula” outside the classroom. Participants are encouraged to practice their Italian conversation and listening skills in real-life situations by interacting with Italian guides, artists, wine-makers, chefs, and Italian friends.

For the 2024 Matta and Lucca Italian Program, you will stay in private apartments located inside Lucca’s walls in the historic center near Lucca Italian School.
First come, first served. Those who sign up first will have a priority selection of the apartment they would like to stay in.
One Apartment located in the Anfiteatro!
Perfect for a couple, 1 person or 2 friends.
A cozy and romantic apartment located in the Roman amphitheater in the historic center with a magnificent view of the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. It features two bedrooms, a kitchen, a large living room, and a bathroom with a shower. It offers a peaceful stay (in a pedestrian area). It can accommodate 1 or 2 individuals.
The apartment is completely renovated. It has fast wifi. TV, Washer and Dryer, Air Conditioning, Indoor Fireplace, and other amenities.
One Apartment located near the Botanical Gardens
TWO PRIVATE Rooms. TWO PRIVATE Bathrooms.
The apartment will accommodate TWO STUDENTS.
This unique apartment is located in the historical building of ‘Palazzo Arnolfini’, which has a rare architectural quality and looks more like a fortress than a town palace. Everything is within walking distance, with Lucca’s famous Botanic Gardens literally a few hundred meters away. This luminous apartment with a high vault ceiling comprises a living room with a dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, a master bedroom, and a bathroom with a shower on the ground floor. One reaches the first floor via a spiral staircase, another bedroom with a comfortable double bed and an en suite bathroom. The basement has extra space and a small closet with the laundry and a dryer. Some bikes come with the apartment with locks. The entrance to this apartment opens onto this graceful courtyard.
One Apartment Via del Fosso – Stellario
Studio Flat for 1 person or Couple
Stellario is a bright and airy studio flat on Via del Fosso, in the heart of one of Lucca’s most quiet and characteristic neighborhoods, a stone’s throw from the famous historic center and the tree-lined city Walls. Stellario has been completely renovated but still maintains a trace of the past: the original tiled floor of the period has been preserved with its unmistakable and cheerful yellow color. From the house’s windows, you can enjoy an enchanting view of the ‘Fossi’, Lucca’s canal, and the Madonna dello Stellario, one of the most beloved monuments of the Lucchesi, which gives the building its name. On entering the flat, there is a small entrance hall from which you can access the bedroom with its new double bed and the adjoining bathroom with shower, or the living area, with a sofa bed (which can accommodate two more people) and a comfortable and functional kitchen island.
The studio flat is equipped with all amenities for a truly comfortable stay: kitchen, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, kettle and moka pot with coffee, tea, and herbal teas always available, 32” HD TV with Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube, unlimited Ultra WI-FI, air conditioning, and electric or gas heating.

This charming apartment is located inside the historic walls of Lucca, about a 5-minute from Piazza Anfiteatro at the end of via Fillungo, the most prestigious street in Lucca near the Porta Santa Maria gate. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful, near bars and a 10-minute walk to Lucca Italian School. There is one large bedroom, a living room with a sofa, a kitchenette with a large dining table and fast WIFI. It is located on the third floor, and there is an elevator.

This modern contemporary apartment is located in a townhouse in Lucca’s inner historic center, near Porta Maria Gate. You will have easy access to the city wall, where one can walk or cycle around the whole old town of Lucca. It is also just a few steps from the end of Fillungo, Lucca’s main shopping street. The flat is located on the second floor of a typical townhouse, recently renovated, and equipped with an elevator. The apartment is very quiet with new windows and offers all sorts of comforts, including Wi-Fi, a washing machine and dryer. There is air conditioning in every room. In front of the apartment is one of Lucca’s famous fountains where you can fill up your water bottles!

Availability is based on first-come-first-served & a reservation is not guaranteed until the deposit or full trip payment is received. A $500 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your reservation. Accepting reservations until September 1, 2024.
The balance of the trip fee will be due on 7/28/2024, approximately 60 days before the program start date. You may also pay the total trip fee at the time of booking. To book with peace of mind and to safeguard your trip investment, in the case of a personal emergency or a family life event that might prevent you from departing for Italy, you may want to consider purchasing travel insurance through agencies such as Travel Guard, AAA, or American Express. Activities and timing of activities may change slightly. A final schedule of daily events will be posted a month before the beginning of the program.
Thursday, September 19: (Day 1) Participants arrive in Lucca
(Melissa is happy to coordinate shared transportation from Florence or Rome nearer to the trip start date once she has everyone’s flight schedules. She will also coordinate a shared group van back to Florence and Rome at the end of the program. Group or private transport to Arezzo in a hired van will be out of the pocket expense.)

How to Reach Lucca
Transport to Lucca: Lucca is situated between Pisa and Florence. Either airport is convenient, and trains frequently run between the two cities hourly. Melissa is also happy to coordinate shared transportation from Florence or Rome nearer to the trip start date once she has everyone’s flight schedules. She will also coordinate a shared group van back to Florence or Pisa (even Rome) at the end of the program. Group or private transport to Lucca in a hired van will be out-of-pocket expense.
