In Italy, it is very popular to take a walk or “fare una passeggiata”. In this new YouTube video, take a stroll with me and my two beagles as we explore the neighborhood. This is the text of the video.

Ciao a tutti! Bentornati nel mio canale! Sono Melissa e questi sono i miei cani! Forse vi ricordate dei miei cuccioli. Ve li ho presentati in un video precedente. Questo è Sinbad…e quella è Moka. Indovinate la cosa che a loro piace di più? Voglio dire… oltre a mangiare? Gli piace andare a zonzo. Sono al settimo cielo quando possono uscire e possono annusare il quartiere.

Hi guys! Welcome back to my channel! I’m Melissa and these dogs. Perhaps you remember my puppies. I introduced them to you in a previous video. This is Sinbad…and that is Moka. Guess what they love the most. I mean… other than eating? They like to go for walks. They are in seventh heaven when they can go out and sniff around the neighborhood.

Ogni volta che loro sentono il rumore dei loro guinzagli, diventano matti. Sanno che finalmente è l’ora della passeggiata. Voglio invitarvi ad accompagnarci nella nostra passeggiata! Allora Siete pronti? I cani sono pronti! Io sono pronta…Andiamo!

Every time they hear the jingle of their leashes, they go crazy. They know that finally, it’s the moment that they have been waiting for. I want to invite you to come along with us on our walk. So, are you ready? The dogs are ready! I’m ready…let’s go!

Dopo una giornata di lavoro è sempre bello uscire con i cani perché posso rilassarmi, godermi momenti di tranquillità, e posso anche osservare la natura della zona. C’è molto da vedere… fiori, alberi, piccoli animali, insetti, lucertole, qualche volta cervi… e anche umani interessanti!

After a day of work, it is really great to go out with the dogs so I can relax, enjoy some peace and quiet, and also observe nature in my area. There is a lot to see…flowers, trees, small animals, insects, lizards, sometimes deer…and even interesting humans.!

Possiamo dire “fare una passeggiata” o mi piace due altre l’espressioni che esprimono questa attività. Sono: “Andiamo a spasso” e “Andiamo a zonzo”. Entrambe frasi sono più informali e vogliono dire: andare a fare un giro per divertimento, qualche volta senza una destinazione precisa. “Spasso” è una parola da conoscere, è informale e divertente. Quando si dice “È uno spasso” significa: “its fun” or “its a hoot” or “what a laugh”. Si può anche usare “spasso” per descrivere una persona. Per esempio potrei dire che “sei uno spasso” which means “you are so funny”!

We can say “fare una passeggiata” for taking a walk or there are two other expressions that express this activity. They are:“Andiamo a spasso” e “Andiamo a zonzo”. Both expressions are informal and mean: to go around just for fun, sometimes without any particular destination in mind. “Spasso” is a great word to learn, it is informal and fun. When you say “È uno spasso” it means: “it’s fun” or “its a hoot” or “what a laugh”. You can also use “spasso” to describe a person. For instance, you could say “sei uno spasso” which means “you are so funny”!

Ogni sera nella mia zona, c’è tanta gente che fa una passeggiata. Qualche volta ci fermiamo per fare due chiacchiere. Altre volte quando esco con i cani, metto le cuffie o gli auricolari nelle orecchie e ascolto un podcast in Italiano.

Every evening in my neighborhood, there are lots of people out and about who take walks. Sometimes we stop and chat. Other times when I go out with the dogs, I put on my headphones, or earbuds in my ears and listen to a podcast in Italian.

Davanti a me si può vedere la collina molto ripida di Mission Peak. Dall’aspetto dei campi potete vedere che qui in California non ha piovuto recentemente. Infatti non ha piovuto da qualche mese. È un grande problema e stiamo passando un periodo di siccità e come risultato c’è mancanza d’acqua.

In front of me, you can see the steep hill that is Mission Peak. By the look of the fields you can see that here in California it hasn’t rained recently. In fact, it hasn’t rained for several months. It is really quite a big problem and we are experiencing a drought and as a result, there is a shortage of water.

In questa zona l’erba è alta ed è molto secca e dorata. I cani amano entrare nell’erba alta per esplorare! Ci sono così tanti odori li’, e si fermano ogni due passi per annusare qualcosa. Qualche volta sono troppo testardi e non vogliono continuare lungo il marciapiede; a questo punto devo tirargli i loro guinzagli e devo dirgli “muovetevi!”. Poi possiamo continuare a muoverci. Aspettate un momento…sentite il ronzio degli insetti?

In this area, the grass is tall and very dry, and golden. The dogs love to enter the tall grass to explore! There are so many odors in there, and they stop every two feet to smell something. Sometimes they are so stubborn and don’t want to continue along the sidewalk; at this point, I must give them a firm tug on their leashes and say to them “get moving!” Then we can continue to get going. Wait a moment…do you hear the whirring of the insects?

Questo è un cespuglio fiorito di bouganville fucsia… e questi sono fiori di lavanda. Ecco questi fiori gialli. Sembra che Moka stia annusando i fiori. Questo è un cespuglio di rosmarino…i cespugli di rosmarino crescono ovunque qui, sono molto abbondanti nella zona.

This is a Fuschia bougainvillea bush…e these are lavender flowers. Look at these yellow flowers. It seems that Moka is smelling the flowers. This is a rosemary bush…rosemary bushes grow everywhere around here, they are very abundant in my neighborhood

Ah! Questi fiori sono gli uccelli del paradiso. Sono magnifici.

Ah, these flowers are “Birds of Paradise”. They are magnificent.

Non so il nome di questi fiori viola, ma mi piacciono! Ascoltate…sentite il rumore delle rane? Sono fantastiche no? Fanno un bel chiasso! 

I don’t know the name of these purple flowers, but I like them! Listen…do you hear the noise of the frogs? Aren’t they are fantastic! They are making quite a clamor! 

In questa zona c’era una volta una vigna. Ecco uno degli edifici rimasti.

In this area, there was once a vineyard. Here is one of the remaining buildings.

Qui dove vivo io ci sono diversi tipi di alberi. Ci sono cipressi…molto alti e maestosi. E ci sono anche le palme. In questa strada ci sono gli eucalipti. Anche questi alberi sono maestosi! Guardate la corteccia multicolore. Sembrano opere d’arte moderna.

Where I live there are lots of different kinds of trees. They are cypress, very tall and grand. There are also palm trees. In this street there is eucalyptus. These trees are also very majestic. Look at the colorful bark. They seem like works of modern art.

Da qui possiamo ammirare una vista della baia di San Francisco. Potete vedere che il sole sta per tramontare. Ecco la luna sopra di noi.

From here we can admire a view of the San Francisco Bay. You can see that the sun is about to set. Here is the moon above us.

Abbiamo quasi finito la passeggiata e siamo quasi tornati a casa. I cani sono stanchissimi! Guardate Sinbad e’ ansimante e con la lingua fuori. Poverino! Ma tra poco, entrambi i cani saranno pronti a ripartire! Non c’è dubbio e domani andiamo a zonzo di nuovo! Adesso tolgo i guinzagli…e loro faranno un sonnellino!

We have almost finished our walk and we are about to return home. The dogs are so tired! Look at Sinbad panting with his tongue hanging out! Poor boy! But, soon both dogs will be ready to go again! There is no doubt that tomorrow we will go for another walk! Now I will take off their leashes… and they will take a nap!
