It is an interactive online Italian language learning magazine called “Allora.”
What a great idea for anyone learning Italian! It is a perfect and innovative resource to move your Italian language skills closer to fluency!
Who is Beatrice? Well, she is someone
you should get to know better!
Beatrice is an energetic Italian language instructor who lives in Florence. Through her site “Italiano Con Beatrice” she works with students all over the world helping them to learn Italian.
Here is a fun fact! Beatrice helped me translate my second novel, “Waking Isabella – Il risveglio di Isabella” and she is also one of the talented Homestay Teachers I feature on my blog. (Stay tuned… there will soon be updates to Beatrice’s lovely Homestay, and I will be posting these soon.)
When I learned about Beatrice’s new magazine called “Allora!” I immediately invited her to write a guest post to talk about her latest project with the Studentessa Matta blog readers. Now… I’ll let Beatrice explain in her own words more about her new online magazine called “Allora!”!
L’idea / The Idea
Si dice che dopo grandi disastri, come le guerre, le persone siano molto più creative e trovino idee nuove e alternative per migliorare la loro vita…forse qualcosa di simile è successo anche a me con la pandemia! Come tutti sanno, il lockdown dello scorso Marzo e Aprile è stato piuttosto severo qui in Italia, non si poteva nemmeno uscire per una passeggiata! Per fortuna io ho continuato a insegnare online e questo ha dato un ritmo e un equilibrio alla mia vita (confesso: forse qualche lezione in pigiama l’ho fatta… Ops!).
It is said that after great disasters, such as wars, people are much more creative and find new and alternative ideas to improve their lives…maybe something similar will happen for me after this pandemic. As everyone knows, the lockdown last March and April was pretty severe here in Italy; you couldn’t even go out for a walk! Fortunately, I was able to continue teaching online, which gave a rhythm and balance to my life (I confess: maybe I did some lessons in my pajamas… oops!)
Poi un giorno la mia studentessa americana Jo mi ha detto che durante quel periodo “studiare l’italiano mi ha salvata” perché anche Jo era “obbligata” a studiare, concentrarsi, partecipare, fare i compiti e di conseguenza distrarsi dalla pandemia. Che sorpresa: l’italiano aveva salvato entrambe!
Then one day, my American student Jo said to me that during the pandemic, “studying Italian saved me.” Because Jo was occupied with studying, concentrating, participating, doing homework—she was distracted from thoughts of the pandemic. What a surprise! Italian saved both of us!
Così ho pensato che forse potevo fare qualcosa per migliorare le lunghe giornate in casa di molte altre persone nel Mondo con un semplice “click!”. Ed ecco l’idea: la rivista Allora!
So, I thought perhaps I could do something more to improve the long days spent at home for others, too, with a simple “click.” And this is how the idea of the on-line magazine “Allora” was born.
L’obiettivo / The objective
Con Allora ho voluto creare una rivista divertente e interattiva per stranieri che studiano l’italiano. Ho deciso di fare qualcosa di innovativo mettendo link a canzoni, mp3 e video per renderla più dinamica. Pensando ai miei studenti ho deciso di raccogliere gli errori più comuni, le domande più frequenti, le differenze culturali più evidenti e scriverle in questa rivista.
With “Allora,” I wanted to create a fun, interactive magazine for foreigners who study Italian. I decided to do something innovative by linking songs, mp3s, and videos to make it more dynamic. Thinking about my students, I decided to collect the most common mistakes, the most frequently asked questions, the most prominent cultural differences and include them in this magazine.
Allora è per tutti; dal numero di Febbraio ci sono delle libellule in ogni pagina che dicono se il livello è facile, medio o difficile.
“Allora” is for everyone; starting with the February issue, there are dragonflies (libellule) on each page that tell if the language level is easy, medium, or hard.
Inoltre, per poter raggiungere gli studenti in tutto in mondo, ho deciso di mettere un prezzo molto basso, davvero accessibile a tutti.
Also, to reach students worldwide, I decided to put a very low price reasonable for everyone.
La rivista / The Magazine
La rivista è mensile e ogni edizioni ha le sue caratteristiche legate al mese. Ecco alcune pagine di Allora.
The magazine is monthly, and each edition has its own unique characteristics related to that month.
Un esempio di livello facile è la canzone. La canzone è un ottimo metodo per imparare grazie alla musicalità. A Febbraio, ho messo il testo di una canzone con dei “blank” sulle parole delle parti del corpo. Ho anche inserito il link a YouTube per ascoltarla e trovare le parole mancanti e alla fine c’è anche un riassunto grammaticale sul vocabolario del corpo umano.
An example of the easy level is the song. Songs are a great way to learn thanks to musicality and rhyming, and rhythm. In February, I put the lyrics of a song that includes parts of the body with “blanks” in the text. I also inserted the link to the music on Youtube to listen to it and find the missing words. In the end, there is a grammar summary of the vocabulary for the human body.
La cucina è una passione per molti, così ho pensato di mettere delle ricette originali per il livello intermedio. Le ricette sono prese da un giornalino che la Coop (un supermercato) regala agli italiani: mi piaceva l’idea di presentare qualcosa che leggono anche gli italiani! Il mio contributo è di aiutare i lettori con il vocabolario più difficile scrivendo una mini spiegazione in italiano e dare qualche informazione grammaticale o culturale.
Cooking is a passion for many, so I thought I’d put some original recipes for the intermediate level. The recipes are taken from a magazine that Coop (an Italian supermarket) gives to Italians: I liked the idea of presenting something that Italians actually read! My contribution is to help readers with the most challenging vocabulary by writing a mini explanation in Italian and to give some grammatical or cultural information.
La sfida per il livello difficile è quella di ascoltare la radio. Da un programma di RadioRai1 prendo dei commenti da ascoltatori di tutta Italia su un tema di attualità, e per ciascun ascolto scrivo le parole chiave per aiutare gli studenti a capire quello che dicono gli italiani.
The challenge for the advanced level is to listen to the radio. From a RadioRai1 program, I take comments from listeners from all over Italy on a topical issue, and for each excerpt, I write the keywords to help students understand what the Italians are saying.
Questi sono solo alcuni esempi, ma Allora ha più di 30 pagine con attività completamente diverse: una mia video lezione; un articolo sulla famiglia; l’oroscopo e il test del mese, un cruciverba e barzellette, i grandi classici errori e una delle mie preferite Ma come si fa in Italia? per capire come si fa qualcosa in Italia, per comportarsi come un vero italiano! (Suggerita per gli expats, per chi vuole venire qui o semplicemente per chi è curioso della nostra cultura!)
These are just a few examples, but “Allora” has more than 30 pages with entirely different activities: a video lesson of mine; an article about the family; the horoscope and the test of the moth, a crossword puzzle and jokes, the great classic mistakes students make, and one of my favorites “How is it done in Italy?” to understand how something is done in Italy, and how to behave like a real Italian! (Recommended for ex-pats, for those who want to come here, or only for those curious about Italian culture).

Who is on the “Allora” team?
La mia attività si chiama Italiano con Beatrice; ho studiato all’università per essere insegnante della mia lingua agli stranieri e insegno dal 2006. Dopo aver lavorato all’estero (Corea del Sud, Serbia, Parigi) sono tornata a Firenze, la mia città, dove oltre ad Allora mi dedico anche a organizzare corsi intensivi di 1 o 2 settimane di lingua e cultura italiana a Firenze con lezioni di italiano e molte altre interessanti attività fatte su misura e originali, tutte legate alla lingua italiana! My business is called “Italiano con Beatrice.” I studied at the university to teach my language to foreigners, and I have been teaching since 2006. After working abroad (South Korea, Serbia, Paris), I returned to Florence, my city, where in addition to “Allora,” I also dedicate myself to Italian Homestays and one or two-week intensive Italian language and cultural immersions courses.
