Immersing in language and culture and traveling with like-minded individuals is a great way to learn the language in a relaxed and friendly environment. My friends and teachers at the Accademia Internazionale in Ascoli Piceno and I are planning an exciting language and cultural program in the lovely town set between the sea and the rolling hills of le Marche.

Highlights of the 2022 “Matta” Ascoli program include excursions to the town of Offida to visit the Romanesque church of Santa Maria della Rocca and have a Tombolo (lacemaking) demonstration. There will be two cooking classes and a full-day beach excursion to San Benedetto del Tronto for lunch and to walk the ocean promenade, shop, swim, or just relax on the white sandy beach. Ascoli is famous for its jousting festival — “la Quintana,” and although we won’t be there for the actual event, we will recreate the fanfare of the festival for you! We will begin with a seminar about the festival and visit Ascoli’s jousting headquarters to see colorful costumes and banners. Our “la Quintana” festival will culminate with a Renaissance dinner complete with music, flag throwers, and dancing. During your stay, there will also be plenty of time to wander and shop, as well as enjoy a coffee or a spritz and a basket of Ascoli’s famous stuffed olives in her beautiful main piazza!
In Ascoli there will also be guided walking tours of the city to see artisan shops — un orafo, a goldsmith, and a ceramic artist — as well as the sanctuary of Ascoli’s patron saint San Emidio and the churches Ascoli is well known for. We will have two cooking lessons with the vivacious teachers at la Accademia Internazionale, who will show us how to prepare pasta AND pizza made from scratch!

The Matta Ascoli Accademia Internazionale Language Program
(Sunday, September 11 – Friday, September 23, 2022)
Language & Cultural Immersion includes:
- 30 hours of Italian Lessons at la Accademia Internazionale Italian Language School in Ascoli (9:00 am – 12:00 pm, with morning break)
- Unlimited Italian conversation practice with teachers & Italian friends
- 13 Days/ 12 nights at Palazzo Ciotti in Piazza del Arringo. The hotel is just a 5-minute walk from the Ascoli Accademia Internazionale in one of Ascoli’s beautiful main piazzas. It is beautifully appointed rooms that feature, air-conditioning, private bath, wifi, and internet access
- 9 Dinners which includes welcome dinner with aperitivo
- All Breakfasts included
- 2 Cooking classes in which we will prepare a pasta AND Pizza and we will dine on what we have prepared
- Historical Walking Tours of Ascoli / visiting major churches and important Roman and medieval sites
- Renaissance Evening recreating the pomp & circumstance of Ascoli’s Joust Festival called la Quintana. This will be a spectacular event complete with costumed ladies and gentlemen, drummers, musicians AND flag throwers who will perform just for our group. We will then attend a Renaissance banquet in one of the local neighborhoods. All levels of language learners are welcome from BEGINNER to ADVANCED. Students will be placed in appropriate classes according to their language levels along with other International students attending la Accademia Internazionale in Ascoli. All classes at la Accademia Internazionale feature a mix of grammar instruction, as well as Italian Culture, designed to take each student to the next level of speaking and comprehension.
Accommodations
We will be staying at Palazzo Ciotti in Piazza del Arringo. The hotel is just a 5-minute walk from the Ascoli Accademia Internazionale and is situated in one of Ascoli’s beautiful main piazzas. The rooms of the hotel are delightfully decorated and feature updated private baths, TV, Internet, Air Conditioning. If you wish to arrive a day early or depart a day later, Melissa can make arrangements with the B&B. Extra days spent at the B&B are considered out-of-pocket expenses and will be paid directly to the B&B.

Availability is based on first-come-first-served & a reservation is not guaranteed until the receipt of deposit or full trip payment. A $500 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your reservation. Accepting reservations until July 13, 2022. (After this date, you can still sign up for the program, but we can’t guarantee accommodations at Palazzo Ciotti in Piazza del Arringo. We will help find alternative housing options, but there may be a small price variation.)
The balance of the trip fee will be due approximately 60 days before the program start date (7/13/2022). You may also pay the full trip fee at the time of booking. To book with peace of mind and to safeguard your trip investment, in the case of a personal emergency or a family life event that might prevent you from departing for Italy, you may want to consider purchasing travel insurance through agencies as such as Travel Guard, AAA or American Express. Sunday, September 11: Participants arrive in Ascoli Piceno in le Marche (Day 1)
(There is a bus you can take right from Rome’s Fiumicino airport that goes directly to Ascoli that takes about 2 hours. Melissa is also happy to coordinate shared transportation from Rome nearer to the trip start date once she has everyone’s flight schedules. She will also coordinate shared group van back to Rome at the end of the program. Group or private transport to Ascoli in a hired van will be out of the pocket expense. You may also arrive in Ascoli a day earlier or leave a day later after the program end, but this would also be an out of pocket expense)

Saturday, September 17 — Beach Day/Andiamo al Mare (Day 7)
10:00 am – 5:00 pm Afternoon Excursion to San Benedetto al Tronto. Walk the promenade along the ocean, shop, take a swim in the ocean, relax on the white sandy beach.

How to Reach Ascoli Piceno
Transport to Ascoli Piceno: Ascoli is located in le Marche along the eastern coast of Italy. It is situated on the other side of the Eastern mountain range that separates it from Tuscany and Umbria. You can easily reach Ascoli by car BUT an even easier way to reach Ascoli is by a bus that leaves several times a day right from Rome’s Fiumicino airport that goes directly to Ascoli that takes about 2 hours. Melissa is also happy to coordinate shared transportation in a minivan from Rome nearer to the trip start date once she has everyone’s flight schedules. She will also coordinate shared group van back to Rome at the end of the program. Group or private transport to Ascoli in a hired van will be out of the pocket expense. You may also arrive in Ascoli a day earlier or leave a day later after the program end, but this would also be an out of pocket expenses)
