Kelly Medford artist from Rome talks about painting. Parliamo dell’arte

Buon giorno a tutti, cari ascoltatori e care ascoltatrici. Come state? Siete pronti per questa nuova puntata di “Tutti matti per l’italiano”? Io sono Melissa, la matta e oggi, il 14 marzo, vi do il benvenuto. Oggi parleremo d’arte e pittura all’aria aperta è ascolteremo Kelly Medford, un’artista americana che vive a Roma. Sono appena tornata da un’escursione pomeridiana di pittura all’aperta e sono ancora coperta di colori ad olio dalla testa ai piedi. Faccio sempre pasticci quando dipingo! Ho preso il mio cavalletto, tubi dei colori ad olio ed i miei pennelli e sono andata nei campi vicino a casa, dove ho trascorso alcune ore disegnando la bellezza del paesaggio della California. Quanto mi piace il profumo dei colori ad olio e quello dell’olio di lino. In passato dipingevo molto e questi odori mi fanno ricordare il processo creativo.

Buon giorno dear listeners. How are you all? Are you ready for a new episode of “Tutti Matti per l’Italiano”? I’m Melissa, la matta and today is March 14. Welcome! Today we are talking about art and plein air painting and we will be hearing from Kelly Medford, an American artist who lives in Rome. I just returned from an afternoon of painting out of doors and I’m still a bit covered in paint! I am a messy painter! I took my easel, tubes of oil paints and brushes out in the fields near my house and spent a lovely couple of hours attempting to capture the beauty of the scenery here in California. How I love the smell of oil paints and linseed oil. It reminds me of the creative process! 

Che cosa mi ha spinto a ricominciare a dipingere con i colori ad olio, mi chiedete? Boh! Questa è una bella domanda! Di solito mi potete trovare davanti al mio computer a scrivere e disegnare, usando programmi di Adobe come Illustrator e Photoshop. Sono una grafica da tanti anni e sono così impegnata che non ho ne’ il tempo ne’ l’occasione per giocare e sporcarmi con i colori ad olio. Con i disegni fatti con un computer e un mouse non c’è disordine e fare pulizia dopo è facile! Ma di recente la mia amica Kelly Medford ha cambiato tutto questo per me. Forse potete ricordarvi che Kelly ed io stiamo collaborando a una settimana d’immersione nella lingua e nell’arte a Roma questo luglio dal 5 al 14. In questo momento Kelly sta visitando gli Stati Uniti, proprio qui nella California. Lei è venuta a trovare i parenti e gli amici, un viaggio che di solito fa i primi mesi del nuovo anno. È molto buffo però, anche se viaggia per divertimento, ovunque vada, Kelly ha sempre un pennello in mano. Quindi anche se è in vacanza, si diverte a dipingere ogni giorno e continua a dirigere lezioni all’aria aperta per coloro che sono interessati ad imparare alcuni dei suoi segreti artistici.

What prompted me to start oil painting again, you may well ask? Good question! Usually I can be found in front of my computer, writing and designing using graphics programs like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I have been a graphic designer for many years and have gotten so busy that I just haven’t had the time or the opportunity to play around and get down and dirty with oil paints. With computer graphics there is no mess and clean up is a snap! But recently my good friend Kelly Medford, changed all that for me. You may recall that Kelly and I are partnering together to create a week of Italian Language Immersion and Art in Rome this coming July 5th – 14th. Currently Kelly is currently visiting the states and has also been in the California Bay area visiting family and friends, a trip she makes usually during the first months of the new year. It’s funny though, even though she is on vacation wherever she goes Kelly always has a paint brush in hand. So even though she is on holiday, she is still busy painting every day and she continues to  lead plein-air or (painting from nature) workshops for those interested in learning some of her artistic secrets.

Anch’io ho partecipato a uno dei suoi workshop qui in California a Big Sur, una zona lungo l’autostrada numero uno, la famosa “highway 1”, circa due ore a sud di San Francisco. Questo tratto della costa della California e’ particolarmente mozzafiato. Ha un mare blu intenso, con le onde dalle creste bianchissime, e le colline rocciose. È un posto da sogno per chi vuole dipingere. Il luogo è bellissimo, ma quello che mi è piaciuto di più del workshop, oltre ad imparare nuove tecniche artistiche, è stato conoscere le altre persone che sono venute per imparare a dipingere. Molti di loro erano principianti, con poca esperienza pittorica. Ma questo non è importante perché ciascuno di loro aveva uno stile diverso e unico che ha scoperto sotto la tutela di Kelly.

During her time here in California I decided to join Kelly and participate in one of her day-long workshops in Big Sur, an area along California’s Highway 1, just about an hour south of San Francisco. This stretch of the California coast line is particularly breath taking. It features indigo waters, white cresting waves and rugged hills. It is a dream location for anyone who wants to paint! The location was lovely, but what I liked most about the workshop, other than learning a few new artistic techniques, was meeting other the other people who had come to learn to paint. Many of them were beginners, with little painting experience. But that wasn’t important because each of them had a unique and different style that they discovered with the guidance of Kelly.

Non c’è bisogno di essere un’artista professionista per partecipare ad uno delle lezioni di Kelly. In effetti quello che lei insegna è un nuovo modo di vedere. Se ci concentriamo sull’ambiente intorno a noi, osservandolo intensamente, possiamo vivere più nel momento. Quindi anche il più piccolo degli schizzi cattura e registra uno stato d’animo o un momento speciale. L’arte non è solo qualcosa per gli individui artisticamente dotati. Piuttosto si tratta di un’esperienza personale, qualcosa che ognuno di noi può sviluppare e godere.

You don’t need to be an accomplished artist to participate in one of Kelly’s art workshops. Indeed what she teaches is a new way of seeing. If we concentrate on the world around us, fully observing it, we can more conscientiously live in the moment. So, even the smallest of sketches captures and records a mood or a special moment. Art is not just something for gifted individuals. Rather it is a personal experience and one that each of us can develop and enjoy.

Questo è esattamente ciò che mi ha ispirato a creare un programma di lingua e arte a Roma con Kelly. Ho sempre ammirato il suo stile di pittura e penso che lei sia una persona molto gentile, socievole e simpatica. Ho pensato: non sarebbe bello collaborare con lei per unire due delle mie passioni – l’arte e la lingua? Quindi nel prossimo programma “Matta”, non solo avremo la possibilità di studiare alla scuola di Roberto Tartaglione – Scud’it – nel cuore di Roma, ma avremo anche la possibilità di disegnare su taccuini speciali (blocchi da disegno per tenere ordinati i nostri schizzi) che Kelly ci fornirà. Lei ci condurrà negli angolini di Roma per disegnare i dettagli che vedremo usando penne, matite e acquerelli. Immaginate quanto bello sarebbe disegnare i giardini e i sentieri della Villa Borghese, nella zona conosciuta come il Pincio. O immaginate di trovarvi in un angolo isolato, disegnando un dettaglio di una fontana barocca del Bernini.

This is exactly what has inspired me to create a program of language and Art in Rome with Kelly. I have always admired Kelly’s painting style and she is such a lovely person. I thought: wouldn’t it be great to team up together to combine two of my loves – art and language. So in the next Matta program, not only will we have the chance to study at Roberto Tartaglione’s school Scud’it in the heart of Rome, but we will get the chance to sketch and do artistic journaling in special notebooks that Kelly will provide us. She will lead us out into the street corners and parks around Rome and we will capture the details that we see using pens, pencils and water colors . Just think how fantastic it will be to sketch the gardens and the pathways in the Borghese Gardens, and the area known as the Pincio. Or just imagine finding yourself in a secluded corner, capturing a detail of one of Bernini’s Baroque fountains.

Quando Kelly è arrivata nella California a febbraio, lei è venuta a trovarmi per una festa a casa mia, organizzata per coloro che sono interessati ad unirsi al nostro programma di Lingua e Arte a Roma. Alla festa c’era tanta gente e, al momento, ci sono già diverse persone che si sono iscritte. Siamo entusiaste e felici! Speriamo che altri lettori del “Matta” blog e del sito di Kelly decidano di unirsi a noi perché questa sarà un’occasione memorabile. Oltre alle lezioni di lingua e d’arte ci sarà anche la possibilità di incontrare altri amici italiani che ceneranno con noi e passeranno le serate a Roma con il gruppo. Incontrerete Lucrezia da “Learn Italian with Lucrezia” e Chiara di “Runaway Daydreamer”; inoltre ci sarà un amico che fa il giornalista, e altri artisti…così ci saranno tante occasioni per immergersi nella lingua e fare conversazione in un ambiente accogliente e amichevole. Ci divertiremo molto a Roma proprio come fanno i romani, con picnic sulle colline intorno alla città, film in teatri all’aperto e musica a Trastevere.

When Kelly first arrived in California in February, she came over to my house and together we hosted an open house for those who are interested in our Language and Art Workshop in Rome. At the open house there were lots of people and folks who are already signing up for the program! We are thrilled and couldn’t be happier! We hope other Matta blog readers and followers of Kelly’s website will join us as this will be a very special occasion. In addition to language and art lessons there will also be the chance to hang out and meet Italian friends who will dining with us and spending evenings in Rome with the group. You will meet Lucrezia from Learn Italian with Lucrezia Youtube Video fame, Chiara from Runaway Daydreamer, a friend who is an Italian Journalist and other artists… so there will be plenty of opportunities to dive into the language and practice your Italian language skills in a warm and friendly environment. We will enjoy Rome as the Romans do, with picnics in the surroundings hills, movies in open air theaters and music in the parks near Trastevere.

Allora! Adesso ascolteremo Kelly. Dato che eravamo così coinvolte a parlare con i nostri ospiti alla festa a casa mia, e poi così occupate a dipingere a Big Sur, non abbiamo avuto tempo per registrare qualcosa insieme per il podcast. Ma non disperate! Più tardi ho inviato a Kelly una serie di domande e le ho chiesto di rispondere nel suo tempo libero. Le ho chiesto come lei abbia cominciato come pittrice e come si sia trovata a Roma, e poi ho voluto sapere di piu’ dei suoi workshop e di come abbia imparato l’italiano. Ha registrato le sue risposte e me le ha mandate. Per rendere le cose più interessanti per il podcast, attraverso la magia del montaggio ho inserito la mia voce nella registrazione… così sembra che io le stia chiedendo le domande in tempo reale. Molto intelligente, no? Quindi senza altri ritardi e spiegazioni…ecco Kelly!

So now let’s hear from Kelly. Because we were so involved talking with our guests at our open house and later so involved in painting in Big Sur we ran out of time to record something for this podcast in person together. So, instead I later sent Kelly a bunch of questions, asking her to respond at her leisure. I asked her about how she got started as a painter and how she found her way to Rome as well as about her workshops and how she learned Italian. She recorded her responses and sent them to me. To make things a little interesting, through the magic of podcast editing, I’m edited myself into her recording, asking her these questions. Pretty tricky, right? So with out further ado here is Kelly!
