Italian Podcast: Celebrating Holidays with Italian Friends – Festeggiamo

This Holiday podcast is comprised of recordings made by Italian friends from all over Italy, in which they recall some of their favorite holiday memories. You will hear messages from Angelo in Tuscany, Lucrezia from Trieste, Claudio from Napoli, Monica from Venezia, Daniele from Rome, Laura from Napoli and last but not least, Pixie Dust from Roma. 

Ciao cari amici…elfi, renne, pupazzi di neve e schiaccianoci magico! Inoltre un saluto super speciale alle stelle della stagione…la Befana e Babbo Natale. Benvenuti tutti al podcast Tutti Matti per l’Italiano. Io sono Melissa e scrivo il Matta blog nel quale esploro tutti gli aspetti della lingua e della cultura italiana. Adesso è il periodo per essere allegri e per celebrare con gli amici la festa del Natale. Mi piace tutto delle vacanze natalizie – fare l’albero, allestire il presepe, preparare i biscotti e trascorrere momenti speciali con la famiglia e gli amici. In questo periodo magico ci riuniamo per celebrare la nascita di un bambino che ha ispirato la pace, l’amore e la speranza. Non importa dove si trova… in America o in Italia, ognuno festeggia le vacanze in modo leggermente diverso e con le proprie tradizioni e ricordi preferiti.

Welcome one and all to the podcast Tutti Matti per l’Italiano! I am Melissa and I write the Matta Blog in which I explore all aspects of the Italian language and culture. Tis’ the season to be merry and celebrate with friends the Christmas holidays. I love everything about the Christmas holidays – decorating the tree, setting up the presepe, making Christmas cookies, and spending special moments with my family and friends. At this magical time of the year, we are united by the celebration of the birth of a baby who inspired peace, love, and hope. No matter where you live, in America or in Italy, everyone celebrates the holiday in a slightly different way and has their own traditions and favorite holiday memories.

Iniziamo prima con una registrazione fatta da Angelo Giannini. Angelo è di Lucca in Toscana ed è uno dei fondatori di Lucca Italian School. Angelo ed io ci stiamo collaborando al prossimo Matta e Lucca Italian School Language Workshop il prossimo settembre. Controllate il Matta sito per sapere più del nostro programma. Nel suo messaggio Angelo ci racconta il presepe tradizionale che ha preparato con suo cugino quando era un ragazzo. Ci racconta anche la sua partecipazione al “presepe vivente”, in cui le persone interpretano il presepe in molti borghi della Toscana. Suona con la sua fisarmonico una canzone natalizia per noi. Ecco Angelo!

We begin first with a recording made by Angelo Giannini. Angelo is from Lucca in Tuscany and is one of the founders of the Lucca Italian School. Angelo and I are collaborating on the next Matta & Lucca Italian School Language workshop in September. Be sure to check out the Matta website for more details about the 2015 program. In his message, Angelo tells us about the traditional presepe he used to make with his cousin when he was a boy. He also tells us his participation in the “living presepe”, in which people re-enact the nativity scene in many small towns in Tuscany. He also plays a Christmas tune for us on his accordion. Ecco Angelo!

Grazie Angelo! Anch’io preparo un presepe con statuette dall’Italia. Ogni anno è leggermente diverso e uso piccoli sassi e muschio dal mio giardino. La creazione del presepe nello stile italiano è diventata una nuova tradizione per la mia famiglia. Grazie Angelo! I also prepare a presepe with little statues from Italy! Each year it is slightly different and I also use small pebbles and moss from my garden. Creating a nativity scene as the Italians do, has become a new holiday tradition for my family.

Adesso sentiremo da Lucrezia di Learn Italian with Lucrezia. Lucrezia frequenta l’universita di Trieste nell’Italia settentrionale. Ogni settimana fa un vlog fantastico per aiutarci con l’apprendimento della lingua. Nel suo messaggio Lucrezia ci racconta le cose che rendono le vacanze in Italia speciali. Parla di passare del tempo con la famiglia e di come i bambini aspettano con anticipo i regali. Parla anche del Cenone del giorno di Natale e ci racconta un po’ della messa alla quale le piace assistere la vigilia.

Next, we will hear from Lucrezia of Learn Italian with Lucrezia. Lucrezia attends The University of Trieste in northern Italy. Each week she sends out fabulous vlogs to help us learn Italian. In her message, Lucrezia talks about the things that make the holiday season in Italy special for her. She talks about spending time with her family and how the children look forward to gifts. She talks about the Christmas eve meal and the big feast on Christmas day. She also tells about the evening mass she likes to attend on Christmas eve.

Grazie Lucrezia! È sempre bello sentire la tua voce. Sono molto contenta che ci siamo incontrate di persona a Roma. È stato uno dei momenti più speciali del mio recente viaggio in Italia. Grazie Lucrezia! It is always wonderful to hear your voice. I’m glad we got to meet in person in Rome this year, it was one of the highlights of my most recent trip to Italy!

Ora sentiremo dal mio amico Claudio Maraniello di Napoli. Claudio ha 31 anni ed è un ingegnere informatico. Però non è un tipico secchione con la testa nel monitor. Mi dice che infatti ha una spiccata vena creativa. Gli piace leggere, andare a ballare salsa e ha molti hobby interessanti come l’improvvisazione teatrale. Ho incontrato Claudio diversi anni fa attraverso il sito di chat chiamato Impariamo. Quando ho visitato la costa Amalfitana alcuni anni fa ho soggiornato a Praiano e lui è venuto da Napoli a trovare me e mio marito per cena. Abbiamo trascorso una serata meravigliosa insieme e da allora ci siamo avvicinati. Nel suo messaggio Claudio parla della Tombola, un gioco italiano che viene giocato tradizionalmente alla vigilia di Natale. Tombola è molto simile a Bingo ma a Napoli a quanto pare può essere molto teatrale! Ecco Claudio per raccontarci di più.

And now we will hear from my friend Claudio Maraniello from Naples. Claudio is 31 and is an information engineer. He is not your typical technology nerd however, he tells me that he is actually very creative. He likes to read, go salsa dancing and has many interesting hobbies such as improv theater! I met Claudio several years ago through the chat site called Impariamo. When I visited the Almafi coast a few years ago and was staying in Praiano, he drove down from Naples to meet me and my husband for dinner. We had a wonderful evening together and have stayed close ever since. In Claudio’s holiday message he talks about the Italian game Tombola that is traditionally played on Christmas eve. Tombola is very similar to American Bingo, but in Naples apparently, it can be quite theatrical! Here is Claudio to tell us more about it.

Mi piacerebbe anche provare gli struffoli, il dolce tradizionale che si fa a Napoli che è coperto di miele. Grazie Claudio! Some day I hope to play a game of Tombola with all of you! I’m sure we would have a lot of fun. I’d also like to try struffoli, the traditional holiday sweet covered in honey that you make in Naples.

Adesso andiamo a Venezia per avere la notizia di Monica Cesarato. Monica è un’insegnante di Italiano ed è “The Cook in Venice”. Ospita studenti a casa sua per Homestay Vacations. Inoltre dà

Let’s travel on over to Venice now to hear from Monica Cesarato. Monica is an Italian teacher and the Cook in Venice. She hosts Italian language students in her home for personalized Homestay language vacations. In addition to that, she gives cooking lessons. In her holiday message, Monica talks about the traditional holiday foods that she prepares for the Cenone or great big feast on Christmas day. She also talks about how she decorates her Christmas tree. It seems that every year she finds a new and creative way to decorate it using unusual colors and ornaments! Ecco Monica.

Ora Daniele Galli ci saluta. Daniele è nato e cresciuto a Roma. Daniele ed io ci siamo incontrati attraverso internet. Quando sono andata a Roma l’anno scorso lui è venuto in motocicletta per trovarmi alla stazione Tiburtina mentre aspettavo il pullman per andare in Basilicata. Abbiamo avuto una bella chiacchierata e abbiamo preso un caffè insieme. Lui sarà disponibile per fare una chat anche con voi l’anno prossimo durante il programma che sto organizzando con Kelly Medford a Roma a luglio. 

Now here is Daniele Galli who sends his greetings. Daniele was born and raised in Rome. Daniele and I met through the internet. When I went to Rome last year he came over on his motorbike to meet me at the Tiburtina Bus station while I was waiting for the bus to take me to the Basilicata. We had a lovely chat and coffee together. He will also be available to chat with you all next year during the program that I am organizing with Kelly Medford in Rome next July.

Daniele ha 37 anni, e nonostante la laurea in Giurisprudenza, non ha scelto di fare né il giudice, né l’avvocato o il notaio: è un giornalista professionista. Si ritiene una mente aperta, coraggiosa, intraprendente. Adora la lingua inglese, la studia da tre anni in maniera seria e non esclude di trasferirsi un giorno in Nord America: negli Stati Uniti o in Canada. Oltre all’inglese, ama le donne, il calcio e la pasta all’Amatriciana. Ma le donne di più. Nella sua registrazione Daniele ricorda come sua mamma ha lavorato sodo per preparare le cene di Natale e sempre aveva un po’ di ansia. Ma per lui, come bambino era tutta una questione di belle luci scintillanti, l’albero e l’anticipazione dei regali. Il periodo natalizio era sempre un momento di gioia che rimarrà per sempre nel suo cuore.

Daniele is 37 years old and although he has a degree in Law, he decided not to be a judge or a lawyer, or even a notary. Instead, he became a journalist. He has an open mind, is courageous, and a self-starter. He loves the English language and has studied it seriously for three years and wants to move someday to North America. Other than English, he loves women, soccer, and pasta all’Amatriciana. But of course, he loves women more than that! In his recording, Daniele recalls how his mother worked hard to prepare the Christmas dinners and always suffered a bit from the stress. For him, however, as a child it was all about the beautiful lights, decorating the tree and the anticipation of presents. Christmas time was always a moment of joy that will remain forever in his heart.

Ormai siamo stati in Toscana, a Trieste, a Napoli, a Venezia e a Roma…quindi è il momento di tornare a sud per sentire un messaggio dalla mia amica Laura Gargiulio. Laura è nata a Napoli e ha trascorso l’ultimo anno e mezzo a Valencia a studiare legge e ora sta per trasferisi a Roma per amore! Il mese prossimo riceverà la laurea e vorrebbe diventare una progettista Europea. Ma più di ogni altra cosa è innamorata della fotografia. Infatti lei gestisce il sito ufficiale di Instagram per IgersNapoli! 

We’ve now been to Tuscany, Trieste, Napoli, Venezia e Roma…so it’s time to head back south and hear a message from my friend Laura Gargiulo. Laura was born in Naples and she accompanied Claudio when he came to meet me in Praiano. Laura has spent the last year and half in Valencia studying law and now she is now moving to Rome for love! Next month she will finish her degree and would like to become a progettista europea. But more than anything she is in love with photography. Infact she manages the official Instagram site for IgersNapoli! !

Nel suo messaggio natalizio Laura parla del presepe Napoletano. Perché lo spazio nel suo appartamento è limitato lei non fa un grande presepe, ma invece continua a usare uno che ha creato all’asilo e concentra la sua energia per decorare il suo albero di Natale.

Last fall Laura and I met up again in Rome for a quick chat in front of Castle S.Angelo. In her holiday message Laura talks about the presepe that Naples is famous for. Because she has limited space in her apartment she doesn’t put up a big presepe but continues to use one that she created in nursery school and concentrates her decorating energy on her Christmas tree.

Buon Natale Laura. Che bell’idea usare il presepe che hai creato quando eri bambina. Non vedo l’ora di vederti a Roma nel 2015! Merry Christmas Laura! I love that you continue to use the presepe you created as a child! Can’t wait to see you again next summer in Rome!

Abbiamo quasi finito il podcast, ma prima di concludere voglio presentarvi Nadia. Lei è l’ultima, ma non meno importante. Nadia è meglio conosciuta come “Pixie Dust” ed è una cuoca meravigliosa. Lei fa i video divertenti sul suo canale di Youtube: Pixie Dust Italian Life Style Nadia è di Roma ma adesso vive in Inghilterra. I suoi ricordi delle vacanze trattano dei momenti trascorsi in famiglia, in particolare con suo nonno nei pressi di Napoli. Lei racconta il cibo e i dolci speciali della stagione come il Pandoro, il Panettone e le castagne. Ecco Nadia: 

We are almost done with the podcast but before ending I want to present to you Nadia. She is the last, but not the least important! Nadia is better known as “Pixie Dust” and she is a wonderful cook. She creates fun Youtube videos on her channel Pixie Dust Italian Life Style. Nadia is from Roma but now lives in England. Her favorite holiday memories have to do with time spent with family, especially her grandfather near Naples. She talks about all the great food and sweets of the season like Pandoro, Panettone and chestnuts. Here’s Nadia:
