Ogni volta che vado in Italia scopro qualcosa interessante. Infatti, l’ultima volta che sono stata in Puglia, ho visitato il piccolo paese di Grottaglie e ho scoperto il Pumo – una portafortuna italiana. Ecco quello che ho scoperto del paese e la portafortuna.
Every time I travel to Italy I discover something interesting. Indeed, the last time I was in Puglia, I visited the small town of Grottaglie and discovered a Pumo – an Italian good luck charm. Here’s what I discovered about the town and the good luck charm.
Il nome “Grottaglie” deriva dal latino e significa “molte gole.”In questa piccola città, situata sulla penisola salentina che divide l’Adriatico e lo Ionio, troverete un sacco di negozi che producono e vendono ceramiche. La ragione di questo è che la terra intorno a Grottaglie è ricca di argilla che è fantastica per la produzione di ceramica. A causa di questa Grottaglie si è sviluppato in un posto preferito per i turisti e la gente locale per comprare oggetti d’arte.
The name Grottaglie comes from Latin and means “many ravines.” In this little town, located on the Salento peninsula that divides the Adriatic and Ionian seas, you will find lots and lots of ceramic shops. The reason for this is that the land around Grottaglie is rich with clay that is fantastic for ceramic making. Because of this Grottaglie has developed into a favorite spot for tourists and locals to buy ceramics.
Ero uno dei visitatori innamorati e ho trascorso un bel pomeriggio a Grottaglie girando per le numerose gallerie. Sono rimasta particolarmente affascinata da una in cui ho trovato un’artista al lavoro dando gli ultimi ritocchi su un oggetto a forma di uovo. Non avevo mai visto un tale oggetto prima ed ero curiosa di saperne di più. Ho scoperto dall’artista che è chiamato un Pumo.
I was one of the enamored visitors and spent a lovely afternoon in Grottaglie wandering through the many ceramic galleries. I was particularly captivated by one in which I found a ceramic artist hard at work putting the finishing touches on an egg-shaped object. I had never seen such an object before and was curious to learn more about it. I discovered from the artist that it is called a Pumo.
“Ma, che cos’è un Pumo?” le ho chiesto. La signorina era felice di dirmi che un Pumo è un manufatto di ceramica artigianale, tipica attività grottagliese, e rappresenta il bocciolo di rosa che sta per sbocciare; rappresenta il nuovo che nasce. Può essere considerato un tipo di uovo – un simbolo di vita nuova.
“But, what exactly is a Pumo?” I asked. The young woman was happy to tell me that a Pumo is a handmade pottery artifact, typical of all grottagliese activities, and represents the rosebud about to bloom; something new about to be born. It can also be considered a type of egg, like an Easter egg that symbolizes new life.
Il Pumo è il tipico portafortuna di Grottaglie in Puglia, e ognuno ne ha almeno uno in casa. Spesso viene usato come ornamento di balconi e cornicioni, e può essere di vari colori, anche se generalmente è uno sfondo di colore crema, verde scuro o giallo ocra. Viene regalato come buon augurio a chi si trasferisce in una nuova casa o inizia una nuova attività.
The Pumo is a typical good luck piece originating in Grottaglie in Puglia, and everyone has at least one in their homes. It is often used as an ornament on balconies or cornices and can be found in all sorts of colors, dark green or yellow ocher. It is presented as a good luck omen to those who move into a new home or who are starting a new business.
Mentre parlavamo l’artista di Grottaglie ha continuato il suo lavoro minuzioso, agilmente dipingere un bel Pumo proprio davanti ai miei occhi.
As we talked the artist from Grottaglie continued her painstaking work, agilely painting a beautiful Pumo right before my eyes.
Certo che ho portato a casa con me un Pumo da Grottaglie. Dopo tutto…tutti noi abbiamo bisogno di più speranza, felicità e fortuna nella vita, vero?
Certainly, I brought home with me a Pumo from Grottaglie. After all…everyone can use a little more hope, happiness, and good fortune in their lives, right?!
